Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has misled residents of the province by promising that load shedding would be a thing of the past by the end of January 2024. His deadline has passed, and we continue to experience load shedding, with no end in sight. Only a Gauteng Emergency Energy Council has been established to oversee the implementation of the Energy Crisis Response Plan. However, the plan does not outline what measures will be implemented. The provincial government doesn’t have any plans to engage with independent power producers. Instead, a budget has been set aside for municipalities to support the roll-out of various energy interventions. The Centre for Child Law has condemned the recent arrest and detention of a child suspected of being an undocumented migrant. The centre said that it was unlawful to arrest and detain a child simply on the basis that the child failed to identify him or herself as a citizen, resident or foreigner at the request of a law enforcement officer. “It is not a criminally punishable offence for a child to fail to produce any form of identity document when requested to do so by an immigration officer or the police,” the centre said. Tshwane mayor Cilliers Brink has been accused of sitting on an Auditor-General (AG) report for the 2022/23 financial year with a generally negative financial performance on the part of the municipality. It was during yesterday’s ordinary council sitting at Tshwane House that the mayor hinted that the municipality was likely to incur almost a similar adverse audit outcome it obtained last year. Saint-Louis: At least 24 people seeking to reach Europe drowned off northern Senegal when their loaded vessel sank, the governor of the Saint Louis region said yesterday. Governor Alioune Badara Samb said 24 bodies had been found since Wednesday after the boat got into difficulty in a particularly dangerous part of the northern coast. The Saint Louis estuary, where the Senegal River meets the Atlantic Ocean, is notorious for its strong currents and areas of thick mud. Yangon: Myanmar’s State Administration Council imposed martial law in Momeik and Mabein townships in Shan state of eastern Myanmar, reports said. THE North West University (NWU) has voiced disappointment over social media posts that have labelled the injury of students following protest action at the Vanderbijlpark campus a “racist spat” between white and black students. A hot-water bottle, placed on the chest of a woman giving birth in a bid to keep her warm, will cost the Limpopo health authorities more than R4.4 million after the woman suffered severe burns and scarring. The plaintiff, only identified as Miss M, turned to the Limpopo High Court, sitting in Polokwane, where she claimed millions in damages from the Limpopo MEC for Health. The court was told she was so badly burnt that she can no longer do strenuous work. The incident also left her depressed and self-conscious. THE Gauteng Health Department is facing a major problem with disconnected telephone lines at some clinics and hospitals. Several hospitals and clinics in the golden province have activated alternative numbers. Telecommunications provider Telkom disconnected the lines on Monday because of alleged outstanding payments, and 83 clinics and 32 hospitals have been affected, with 16 hospitals still having problems. According to Gauteng Health spokesperson Motalatale Modiba, the delayed payments were a result of discrepancies in Telkom’s invoices. He said that they had several discrepancies with Telkom in which it would send invoices with descriptions of facilities that did not belong to the department. Israeli forces shot dead 104 people when a crowd rushed towards aid trucks yesterday, the health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza said, in one of the worst single incidents of a nearly five-month war. OAKLAND: A California state judge has tentatively ruled that nearly 6 000 black factory workers can sue Tesla as a group for the electric vehicle maker’s alleged failure to address rampant race discrimination and harassment at its Fremont plant. California Superior Court Judge Noel Wise in Oakland said in a written order that the 2017 lawsuit presents questions common to the class of whether Tesla was aware of the alleged misconduct and refused to take steps to prevent it.
