THE NATIONAL Treasury said it would implement a number of cost-cutting measures to rein in government spending, including a hiring freeze, after a shortfall in revenue collection. The Treasury, in response to an ailing economy, said it had outlined the measures in a letter addressed to national departments, provinces and public entities. Weekend media reported hat the measures also included a halt in advertising new procurement contracts for all infrastructure projects. Responding to Reuters questions, the Treasury said the cost-cutting plan was “due to the weak performance of the economy and the shortfalls in revenue collection”. AS SOUTH Africans continue to deal with the high cost of living in the country, new vehicle sales fell to the biggest year-on-year decline in sales since December 2021. According to figures released by Naamsa, the Automotive Business Council, South Africa’s new vehicle sales fell 3.1% in August to 45 679, the biggest year-on-year decline in sales since December 2021. Naamsa said that the weak new vehicle sales performance underlined the ongoing stressed business and consumer environment in the country given that negative economic considerations still greatly outweigh positive ones. OLD MUTUAL has announced that the four-year legal battle with its former CEO Peter Moyo has ended following the Constitutional Court dismissing his case. EUROPE’S top copper producer Aurubis warned that it may face losses in the hundreds of millions of euros after being hit by a massive scam involving shipments of scrap metal that it uses in its recycling business. The International Monetary Fund’s First Deputy Managing Director Gita Gopinath praised South Africa’s central bank for being proactive in raising interest rates, but said energy and logistics chal- lenges were restricting growth. It is believed that criminal syndicates have hijacked at least 50 state-owned buildings in the Johannesburg CBD. Angela Rivers, the chairperson of the Joburg Property Owners and Managers Association, has told news broadcaster eNCA that there were at least 57 hijacked buildings in the Joburg inner city. Over 200 families were displaced when the Usindiso Building in Marshalltown caught fire around 1am on Thursday morning. Brace yourself. A massive fuel hike is on the cards when the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) adjusts fuel prices for September. Commenting on unaudited data from the Central Energy Fund (CEF), the Automobile Association (AA) said the hike in the petrol prices would be the highest since July last year, while the increase to diesel would be a record hike. “According to the CEF’s data, the price of petrol is expected to climb by between R1.59/litre for ULP 93 and R1.65/l for ULP 95. Manufacturing activity in South Africa shrank for the seventh month in a row in August, according to the Absa Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI). The seasonally-adjusted PMI rose to 49.7 points in August from 47.3 points in July, but it stayed below the 50-point mark that separates expansion from contraction. Market expectations ahead of the release predicted that the PMI would remain in contractionary territory for the seventh straight month.
