ROYAL Bafokeng Platinum (RBPlat) yesterday said it expected its earnings to drop by double-digits in a trading statement for the six-month period ended June 30 on the back of lower platinum group metal (PGM) prices. RBPlat said it was in the process of finalising its financial results. A weaker PGM pricing environment, coupled with lower 4E ounce production and inflationary pressures contributed to a decrease in the mining firm’s earnings. Basic earnings per share (Eps) and headline earnings per share (Heps) regressed into estimated basic loss per share (estimated LPS) and estimated headline loss per share (estimated HLPS) from the previous corresponding period, it said. TYMEBANK, a fast-growing digital retail bank, experienced an intermittent outage between 17:02 to 18:29 on Tuesday (July 25) and then a total outage from 18:29 to 19:02 due to a network connectivity issue, the bank said in response to BR questions yesterday. GLOBAL coal consumption hit a new record high in 2022 and will stay near that level this year as strong growth in Asia outpaced declines in the US and Europe, the International Energy Agency (IEA) said yesterday. Coal consumption last year rose by 3.3% to 8.3 billion tons, according to the IEA’s mid-year Coal Market Update. This year and next year, small declines in coal-fired power generation were likely to be offset by rises in industrial use of coal, the report added. ARCELORMITTAL South Africa (Amsa) reported an interim headline loss as Kobus Verster, the CEO of ArcelorMittal South Africa, said yesterday that load shedding, high inflation and weak demand from the key steel-consuming sector put it on the back foot. The steel manufacturer in its financial results for the six months ended June 30 reported a headline loss of R448 million compared to 2022 first half R3 billion profit and declared no dividend for the period. CONSUMERS in South Africa may start seeing prices on the shelves normalising in the months ahead as producer prices for final manufactured goods at the factory gate continued the downward streak and fell to a two-and-a-half year low in June. Data from Statistics South Africa (StatsSA) yesterday showed that most major categories had moderated further, amplified by the higher base established last year. StatsSA said the annual producer price inflation (PPI) decelerated further to 4.8% in June, down from 7.3% in May. This PPI reading was below consensus expectations of 5.8% to 6.3% year-on-year, the lowest level since February 2021 when the print was at 4% year-on-year. DIVERSIFIED mining giant Anglo American delivered lower earnings in the six months to June as lower commodity prices and higher costs took a toll. In its interim financial results for the six months ended June 30, 2023, the group yesterday reported a 41% decrease in underlying earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation, which amounted to $5.1 billion (R90bn), largely due to weaker product prices. The group flagged that attributable profit dropped by 66% to $1.26bn, while total group production increased by 10%, but average prices for its basket of products decreased by 19%. Money lessons that South Africans were forced to learn during the Covid-19 pandemic are quickly being forgotten as high interest rates and inflation take their toll and drive up their financial stress and debt levels. Two surveys released recently, Old Mutual’s 2023 Savings and Investment Monitor and DebtBusters’ second annual Money Stress Tracker, show that high numbers of consumers are experiencing financial stress and they have rising, unsustainable levels of debt in proportion to household income. IN JANUARY 2025, the global anti-money laundering watchdog, the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), will review its decision to greylist South Africa and interrogate the public and private sector measures to address its concerns. The country will need to demonstrate a practical, scalable plan to combat money laundering, fraud and other financial crimes. Failing to achieve this will have serious economic knock-on effects, such as a significant decrease in international capital inflows and downgrading by credit rating agencies, all of which will negatively impact the rand. SOUTH Africa is a poor country with massive unemployment and huge levels of poverty and is involved in an ongoing battle with very high food inflation. Millions of people live below the poverty line. The situation is desperate. It stands to reason that any opportunity to reduce food prices should be enthusiastically grasped. Yet in the case of statutory levies on basic foods, this is simply not the case. In terms of the Marketing of Agricultural Products Act, these levies may be implemented upon acceptance of an application to the National Agricultural Marketing Council.
