THE COST OF living in South Africa is expected to firmly stay elevated with headline inflation above the 6% upper limit for the remainder of the year before slowing next year. This is according to the Inflation Expectations Survey for the first quarter of 2023 conducted by the Bureau for Economic Research (BER) at the Stellenbosch University. The 2023 first quarter survey of financial analysts, business executives and representatives of the trade union movement was conducted between February 20 and March 9. The BER yesterday said the average inflation expectations for 2023 and 2024 increased by 0.2 percentage points, relative to the fourth quarter of 2022. PPC SAID YESTERDAY that lower disposable incomes and no major increase in infrastructure spending had impacted its operations in the 12 months to March 31. The share price fell sharply by 8.93% to R2.65 at the close of the JSE yesterday. Former CEO of Artscape Michael Maas died on March 14, at the age of 67. Artscape management said: “Artscape mourns the loss of our beloved former CEO Michael Maas who sadly passed away. Born on November 1, 1955, he died peacefully on March 14.” Maas stepped down as the CEO of Artscape in October 2014 after being with the theatre company for 18 years. Current Artscape CEO Marlene le Roux said she was shattered and saddened by the news of Maas’s death, along with the Artscape family. A memorial was hosted at the Artscape in honour of Maas. AFTER having spent much of her formative and teenage years in hospital seeking treatment and then in remission for cancer until 17, a young woman’s dream of following in the footsteps of her paediatrician has been realised. In Grade 9, Nosiphiwo Mandla, now 33, had shared with her childhood paediatrician, Dr Abe Daniels, 73, her dream to become just like him. At 7 months old, Gqeberha-born Mandla was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia by Daniels.
