Early yesterday morning, the world population officially reached 8 billion, surpassing its last milestone of 7 billion in 2011. Marking this event yesterday, Statistics SA (StatsSA) said the country had the 25th highest population with 60.86 million people.
At a briefing hosted by StatsSA and the UN Population Fund (UNFPA), officials said it was difficult to record the 8th billionth child born on the planet, but it was believed it was a child, born at 1.29am on November 15 in the Philippines.
