The legislature continuously makes the message clearer and louder by passing legislation designed to eradicate sexual harassment from the workplace, the Labour Court said in awarding a police captain R50 000 after she was sexually harassed. THE Enyobeni Tavern case was again postponed at the East London Magistrate’s Court yesterday for the State to furnish further details. Enyobeni Tavern owner Vuyokazi Ndevu and her husband, Siyakhangela Ndevu, the tavern’s manager, face a charge of contravening the Liquor Act. Both are charged with two offences of selling or supplying intoxicating liquor to persons under 18, and conniving with/permitting employees and agents to sell or deliver intoxicating liquor to persons under 18. The case follows the discovery of 21 bodies of teenagers, the youngest aged 13, at the Enyobeni Tavern in Scenery Park, East London, in June. A regional sales manager who was unfairly dismissed from his position, as found by the CCMA, has been reinstated after the Labour Court dismissed his employer’s application to set the arbitrator’s decision aside. Robert Greyling had worked for Trudon (PTY) Ltd and after being unfairly dismissed, won an arbitration award at the CCMA ordering his reinstatement and payment of back pay totalling R1.162 million. Trudon, publishers of the Yellow Pages phone directory, had approached the Labour Court to have the CCMA’s decision reviewed and set aside. Academic research is not always abstract or theoretical. Nor does it take place in a vacuum. Research in many different disciplines is often grounded in the real world; it aims to understand and address problems that affect people and the environment, such as climate change, poverty, migration or natural hazards. Over the last 50 years, the relationship between researcher and participant has fundamentally changed. Previously, research participants were viewed merely as objects of study. They had little input into the research process or its outcomes. Now, participants are increasingly viewed as collaborative partners and co-creators of knowledge. WITH tobacco-related diseases, disabilities and deaths costing the public health system up to R14.48 billion, citizens have been urged to quit smoking. Professor Michael Herbst, a health consultant of the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa), said non-communicable diseases such as cancers, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and chronic lung diseases were in most cases aggravated and brought on by smoking. Herbst said with more and more people smoking, illnesses normally prevalent in elderly persons were now affecting younger age groups between the ages of 30 and 40.
