THE EFF has rejected the appointment of Struggle stalwart Barney Pityana to chair the National Lotteries Commission. According to the party, his appointment is an “obstacle” to youth development in a country plagued by unemployment. Four suspects who are believed to be part of a group of criminals who robbed a jewellery store at a Westville, Durban, shopping centre last month were arrested. The Star’s sister newspaper, The Mercury reported last month that 10 brazen robbers stormed a jewellery store at a Westville shopping centre and made off with jewellery and a box of vouchers. Marshall Security spokesperson Tyron Powell said the suspects had been involved in several robberies in Durban. He said at about 12.30pm, members of Marshall’s Special Operations Team, SAPS Phoenix Trio Crimes Unit, SAPS Crime Intelligence and Business Against Crime received information related to the Westville shopping centre robbery on June 30. MEREBANK residents believe they have found a remedy to minimise chemical gas inhalation coming from industries operating around their neighbourhood. In an evacuation seminar organised by the Merewest Community Foundation (MCF) on the weekend, residents were supplied with spekboom tree seedlings to plant in their homes in order to minimise gas inhalation during a gas leak from chemical companies in the area. Apart from being taught about evacuation plans during disasters, residents were also supplied with and taught about the spekboom plant, which absorbs carbon dioxide. THE GAUTENG Department of Education has dismissed assertions by a Pretoria teacher that MEC Panyaza Lesufi had rejected her appeal when she was fired after being accused of racism. Yesterday, The Star reported that Anneke Smit, represented by the Solidarity Union and accused of racism, won a case brought against her at the Education Labour Relations Council. The council ruled that the educator, who had been fired from her job at a Pretoria school, was falsely accused of racism, suspended and unfairly dismissed in September 2021. WORKERS, fruit farmers and suppliers to Tiger Brands’ Langeberg and Ashton fruit canning factory have achieved temporary relief with the postponement of the closure of the plant for a year, during which time the search for a buyer will be intensified. Cosatu Western Cape secretary Malvern De Bruyn said the unions organised at Langeberg and Ashton Foods (LAF) “forced Tiger Brands to keep the canning plant open for 12 months and save nearly 7 500 jobs linked to the value chains in the area”. FARMWORKERS’ representatives have expressed reservations about a proposal by Parliament to ensure that the children of farmworkers are trained and enabled to manage farms in a bid to prevent generational entrapment as unskilled and cheap labourers. Last week, portfolio committee on employment and labour chairperson Lindelwa Dunjwa (ANC) said: “If the first generation of farm labourers was unskilled, it can’t be that their offspring must be trapped in this perpetual cycle of an unskilled labour force.” Dunjwa said the Department of Employment and Labour should consider introducing skills transfer levies that are in place in other sectors of the labour market as a means to entice farm owners to oblige.
