BUSINESS activity in South Africa decelerated slightly in February amid interest rate hikes and heightened inflation expectations, the composite leading business cycle indicator showed on Tuesday. Economists flagged that it indicated growth was slowing in South Africa. The SA Reserve Bank (SARB) said yesterday that the composite leading business cycle indicator fell slightly by 0.1 percent to 127.2 index points from 127.3 points in January. The SARB said decreases in six of the 10 available component time series outweighed increases in the remaining four. The largest detractors were a decrease in the number of residential building plans approved and a deceleration in the six-month smoothed growth rate of job advertisement space. NON-PROFIT organisation Just Share and Aeon Investment management said that on Tuesday, following extensive engagement with Standard Bank, they agreed on the wording of a shareholder-proposed resolution that has been tabled for voting, ahead of the bank’s May annual general meeting (AGM). According to Just Share, the non-binding, advisory resolution requests that Standard Bank, over a three-year time frame, provides shareholders with increasingly detailed information about its financed emissions from oil and gas. “Financed emissions are the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that banks and investors finance through their loans and investments. Hosts Golden Arrows snatched a late 2-1 win over Kaizer Chiefs in a Premiership match at Princess Magogo Stadium in KwaMashu yesterday. AFRICAN governments maintained spending on infrastructure, increasing the number of projects by a fifth compared with 2020, in spite of Covid and rising debt levels, according to a study by professional services firm Deloitte. The Deloitte African Construction Trends 2021 Outlook report covered 462 projects with a value of $521 billion (R8.21 trillion), with projects in southern Africa accounting for $147.7bn of that, while West Africa led the spend and in terms of the number of projects for the first time, with $172.8bn of projects. The UN Population Fund recently released the 2022 State of World Population report. It highlights that almost half of all pregnancies between 2015 and 2019 were unintended. That’s roughly 121 million unintended pregnancies each year. Unintended pregnancy is defined as pregnancy among women who were not planning to have any (more) children. This includes pregnancies that occurred earlier than desired. The report also says over 60% of unintended pregnancies end in abortion. And 45% of all abortions performed globally are unsafe. About 7 million women a year are hospitalised as a result. Up to 257 million women who want to avoid pregnancy are not using safe, modern contraception methods. Four of the country’s nine provinces carry malaria risk while 10% of the population is at risk of contracting malaria.
