Only the top half of a Rover could be seen sticking out of the water off a Richards Bay beach after the driver ‘showboated’ in front of beachgoers. Two videos of the incident, which apparently took place on New Year’s Day, have gone viral on social media – one of the driver showboating and the other of the semi-submerged vehicle. The number of firefighters at the scene was reinforced following the sudden re-emergence of the fire. They had earlier attended to hot spots on the fourth floor of the extensively damaged National Assembly, which was still smouldering. Their return comes as the avian flu outbreak has ravaged seabird populations in the Western Cape. The African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary (APSS) facilitated the release. Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries (DEFF) spokesperson Zolile Nqayi said African penguin numbers were drastically declining and if the current trajectory continued they could be extinct in 15 years. World-renowned Kenyan conservationist Richard Leakey, whose work contributed to the recognition of Africa as the birthplace of humankind, has died at the age of 77. Leakey, a National Geographic explorer who also spearheaded campaigns to stop poaching in Kenya by famously burning the country’s stockpile of poached ivory, served in various positions in the Kenyan government, including the National Museums of Kenya, the Kenya Wildlife Service and as head of the civil service, according to BBC News Africa.
