Given Majola WHILE consumers contended with a difficult economic environment, creditors were being repaid between R700 million to R800m on a monthly basis, according to National Debt Counsellors’ Association chairperson Benay Sager. The association said that last year consumers under debt counselling paid creditors an amount of R10 billion. Sager said the South African debt counselling industry has proved to be “extremely impactful”, because it was able to negotiate lower interest rates. Most consumers who successfully completed the process saved between R50 000 and R80 000 in interest and fees. Each quarter around 10 000 consumers were said to complete debt counselling and get clearance certificates, which was a considerable improvement since the early days of the industry. SONRI NAIDOO THE GAUTENG provincial government has declared the sinkhole situation in Khutsong a disaster. Over the years, the area has been battling with leaking sewage pipes caused by ageing underground pipes, with the resultant constant wet soil causing the sinkholes. Many residents have lost their homes and their valuables in the sinkholes. The Gauteng government has assisted residents who are still affected by the sinkholes by moving them to a new housing project in Khutsong South. Data from the BER showed that confidence in the other services sector rose from 34 index points in the second quarter to 37 index points in the third quarter of 2021. WHILE the number of complaints received by the Office of the Pension Funds Adjudicator (Opfa) in the last financial year declined, withdrawal benefits complaints registered the highest number of complaints at close to 53 percent of the 7 014 complaints received, according to the office’s 2020/2021 annual report. Complaints relating to the non-payment of retirement fund contributions came in second at close to 24 percent.
