Sinenhlanhla Zungu sinenhlanhla.zungu@inl.co.za A GROUP of women from Mpumalanga near Hammarsdale have been motivated by the Covid-19 pandemic economic downturn to strive to become emerging farmers.
Hloniphile Meyiwa, 32, Kholisiwe Mlingo, 35, Zanele Sithole, 26, and Delisiwe Khumalo, 47, are among many women in the community who are fast becoming well established crop farmers. They plant cabbages, spinach and tomatoes, which they sell to their nearest produce market, the Webber market and local stores.
“We are extremely happy with what we are profiting from the business,” said Meyiwa.
The not-yet-named and unregistered business was Bhekithemba Mthembu’s idea. Mthembu bought vegetables from local farmers and sold them at markets and stores.
