However, the now retired Dr Piet Engelbrecht will be able to put all that behind him. The parents of the girl, who will turn 10 in November, persisted with a string of court applications to try to obtain damages from the specialist. The mother, who is not identified in order to protect the identity of the child, said that if she had known she was carrying a baby with Down syndrome, she would have opted for an abortion. In South Africa it is against the law to abandon a child – specifically an infant – in such a way that the baby is likely to die. But people are rarely prosecuted for this crime. This is usually because the perpetrator – often the mother – cannot be located. When found, individuals are usually charged with murder. Quantifying the number of infants who die as a result of abandonment is challenging, according to a National Child Homicide Study that found it difficult to distinguish between the different causes of death during infancy. Pfizer said in a statement yesterday the agreement with Biovac meant its global vaccine supply chain and manu- facturing network would span three continents and include more than 20 manufacturing facilities. The Life Esidimeni inquest into the deaths of 144 psychiatric patients has been postponed to tomorrow due to legal representation concerns of potentially implicated officials. Clearly this will affect employment and will have an enormous dampener on job creation. The Hague: Former Rwandan minister Augustin Ngirabatware, sentenced to 30 years for his role in the country’s genocide, will spend the rest of his term in Senegal, his judicial overseers announced in The Hague yesterday. LAGOS: Police and government authorities have secured the release of 100 people, including women, children and nursing mothers, who were kidnapped from their village in north-western Nigeria over a month ago, a local police spokesperson said. The released captives had been abducted on June 8 from Manawa village in Zamfara state, Mohammed Shehu, the state’s police spokesperson, said in a statement on Wednesday.
