The NIDS-CRAM is a study conducted by a national consortium of 30 social science researchers from local universities. The group’s researchers said the “pre-pandemic” or “normal” rate of drop-outs, according to the General Household Survey of 2018, was about 230 000 learners in 2018. Using the NIDS-CRAM data, the researchers estimated that in May 2021 the total number of 7-year-old to 17-year-old learners who have not attended school once during 2021 was between 650 342 and 753 371. “This marks a threefold increase in learner drop-out.…

Kouwenhoven fled to South Africa in December 2016 citing ill health while his trial was under way in the Netherlands. He was convicted in absentia in 2017 and sentenced to 19 years’ imprisonment. The trial court found him guilty of illegally supplying weapons to Taylor’s regime between 2001 and 2003 and participating in war crimes committed by Liberian forces and militia between 2000 and 2002. The DBE said: “The extension became necessary when additional doses for basic education personnel became available. THE SA Democratic Teachers’ Union (Sadtu) will sign a wage agreement with the government today, following three months of public sector wage talks. Sadtu general secretary Mugwena Maluleke said the union would sign the deal following consultation with members.
