A lower court earlier sentenced Aardiel Essop to 10 years imprisonment after he was convicted on 45 charges of contravening the Films and Publications Act, as well as kidnapping. Unhappy with the fact that the magistrate compared his case to another in which a man was sentenced to 10 years for 144 pornographic transgressions, Essop appealed to the North Gauteng High Court, Pretoria. THE labour laws are specifically meant to govern and control the employment relationship. It is extremely important that every entity understand what is an employee and what governs the relationship. Obviously there are many types of structured engagements whereby one person working for another might fall outside the employment relationship. For instance, a relationship between a house owner and an external plumber would not be an employment relationship, although the householder would pay that person and would ask the person to perform certain services in accordance with their professional ability. Iran’s largest navy warship sank yesterday in the Gulf of Oman after catching fire. A blaze broke out on the 679-foot Kharg around 2:25am in Iranian waters, and it sank off the port of Jask, close to the Strait of Hormuz, after firefighting efforts that lasted nearly a day, Iran’s semi-official Fars News reported. The aging vessel, built by Britain in 1977 and part of Iran’s maritime fleet since 1984, had been used for training exercises and to resupply ships at sea. Around 400 troops were aboard the ship and about 20 were injured, according to Iranian state media. WASHINGTON: Tesla Inc is recalling nearly 6 000 US vehicles because brake caliper bolts could be loose, with the potential to cause a loss of tyre pressure, documents made public yesterday show. The recall covers certain 2019-2021 Model 3 vehicles and 2020-2021 Model Y vehicles. Tesla’s filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said it had no reports of crashes or injuries related to the issue and that the company would inspect and tighten, or replace, the caliper bolts. Tesla said that loose caliper bolts could allow the brake caliper to separate and contact the wheel rim, which could cause a loss of tire pressure in “very rare circumstances.” It has since taken measures to prevent loosening of the bolts in the assembly process. |…

RETAILER Shoprite Holdings said yesterday that it had sold its Nigerian operations, Retail Supermarkets Nigeria Limited (RSNL), to local firm Ketron Investment, a subsidiary of property firm Persianas Investment. The amount of the deal was not disclosed. It includes both a franchise agreement, which secures RSNL the right to continue to use the Shoprite brand and an administration and services agreement, which provides RSNL with administration and technical support from the Shoprite Group for an initial period of five years. The sale forms part of Shoprite’s strategic review process of its capital allocation to its non-South African operations. “Accordingly, a decision was taken to dispose of its total interest in RSNL,” said Shoprite. FISHING company Oceana Group grew its profits despite Covid-19 disruption for the six months ended March 31, 2021, thanks to strong demand for its products. Profit before tax increased 5 percent to R489 million, while earnings per share rose 13 percent to 284 cents and headline earnings per share were up 4 percent to 260.5c in the reported period. The modern workplace is not a garden of friendly Buddhas smiling upon us – it has become cutting-edge, cut-throat, and is a breeding ground for interpersonal violence, inclusive of bullying and (sexual) harassment. LAGOS: Twitter yesterday removed a post by Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari threatening punishment for regional secessionists blamed for attacks on government buildings. NEW YORK: Ghislaine Maxwell will remain in a New York jail after a federal appeals court yesterday rejected the British socialite’s latest request for bail. THE recent “joint declaration” of the Namibian and German governments on dealing with the 1904-08 genocide marks the first time a former colonial power has officially offered an apology to another country for state sponsored mass crimes. The agreement stipulates Germany will pay €1.1bn for development projects in Namibia over the next 30 years. Some pundits consider the accord a potential template for efforts towards post-colonial reconciliation for other former colonies and colonial powers. We recognise this is the first time a former colonial power has admitted an historical injustice on a state-to-state level. Jerusalem: The Israeli army yesterday said it had arrested a Hamas leader in the occupied West Bank accused of setting up a base for the Palestinian militant group in the territory. Special forces arrested Sheikh Jamal al-Tawil in the city of Ramallah l, the army said.
