Stuart Freeborn already had decades of filmmaking experience when he began work on Star Wars: A New Hope (1977). He shared that knowledge with those who came to work in his department, motivating the crew to push themselves and strive for perfection. Both Kay Freeborn and Graham Freeborn—Stuart’s wife and son respectively—worked as makeup artists, too, and alongside Stuart on the Star Wars films, beginning with A New Hope. Kay Freeborn made the full-body suit for Chewbacca. She knitted the Wookiee fur from mohair and yak hair. When it came time to bring Chewbacca back for the sequel trilogy, Neal Scanlan’s team tried other techniques but ultimately matched Kay’s original materials and approach. They equated Chewbacca with hallowed ground. Graham Freeborn is credited as chief makeup artist on The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi (1983).
