K2 attracts larger-thanlife figures. The first major expedition to it, in 1902, featured Aleister Crowley. Crowley was a superb climber, but not a team player. He slowed progress by insisting on bringing a small library all the way to base camp. Half-way up the mountain, he threatened to shoot a fellow member.
