The US Postal Service has issued a semi-postal stamp to help raise funds for those diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The Healing PTSD semi-postal stamp features a photographic illustration of a green plant sprouting from the ground, which is covered in fallen leaves. The image is intended to symbolize the PTSD healing process. Tens of millions of Americans will experience PTSD in their lifetimes. Today, the nation is increasingly dedicated to compassionately treating this mental health issue. David McRedmond, the Chief Executive of An Post, the post office of Ireland, recently confirmed that the rise in stamp prices saved the organisation from financial ruin. Stamps appeared at a time in history when the ancient Chinese empire was opening up to Western trade and influence. After the Opium Wars, nearly thirty treaty ports were established along the Chinese coast, up the Yangtze River and inland. Have you always had an interest in stamps and stamp collecting? When did this begin? My interest in stamps began when I was nine or ten years old. I was given a mixed packet of stamps and as a child who loved history and geography I thought they were fascinating. My collecting began from there and it was a combination of the eyecatching artwork, learning about countries of the world and the breadth of history one can learn from looking at stamps that kept me interested. Over the course of the second half of the 20th century the personality and imagery of Mao Zi-dong loomed large in China. Chairman of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), head of state, and the key figure behind the establishment of the Peoples’ Republic of China (PRC), he in many ways personified the PRC. His beliefs were the military and ideological driving force behind the CCP’s rise to power. The path the PRC took after its 1949 founding was also tied to Mao’s ideology as well as his leadership position or a reaction to them from other leading members of the CCP. During the early decades of the 19th century the region that later became the Principality of Montenegro was home to several local warlords pitting guerrilla tactics against the formidable army of the Ottoman Empire who for centuries had occupied the nearby Adriatic coast. Despite allying their combined forces with neighbouring Serbia, the warlords initially failed to eject the invaders, who had made a stronghold of a port the enemy knew as Antivari. In 1851 the Austrian navy, at that time belonging to the Ottomans, established a post office at Antivari and introduced the first adhesives: Austrian stamps used primarily on Ottoman maritime mail from the port. The Royal’s new home opened by The Queen Her Majesty The Queen officially opened the new home of the Royal Philatelic Society London on 26 November, highlighting the organisation’s reputation as the world’s preeminent philatelic society and its links to the Royal family. The historic event, which follows the Royal’s move to new London premises at 15 Abchurch Lane, began with the Lord Mayor (Alderman William Russell) greeting The Queen outside the Royal’s building before she was introduced to the President Richard Stock and given a tour of the impressive building which has only very recently been refurbished. The falcon is undoubtedly the most popular bird in the Gulf states where, in the old days, it was used by the Arab rulers for hunting and as symbols of power. On more than one occasion, falcons have been depicted on postage stamps released by countries like Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. In 1965, the State of Kuwait issued a most attractive set of eight stamps featuring a Saker Falcon; 400,000 sets were printed but it seems the stamps were heavily used on mail at the time. In Barnsley, thirty years ago I saw a copy of Medi Theme [Medical philately] at one of my patient’s house. I am also interested in the history of the civilisation of the world. For well over a century, commemorative stamps have appeared from postal administrations around the world. From the beginning it was to mark and observe specific events pertinent to the country of issue, but as time progressed, a wider view was taken and people and worldwide past happenings began to feature. Now in the 21st century it has become different, whereby a postal administration would wish to have a set number of commemorative issues in a year, and looks for anniversaries to fulfil this commercial need.
