Grouse-moor management and grouse shooting in Scotland is facing significant change following the Werritty review.
The Grouse Moor Management Group, chaired by Professor Alan Werritty, was established in November 2017 to examine the environmental impact of grouse-moor management practices, including muirburn. It also looked at the option of licensing grouse-shooting businesses, which it said could be introduced within five years.
Following the publication of the long-awaited report, Roseanna Cunningham, environment secretary in the Scottish government, said a licensing regime would be considered sooner rather than later.
Interested parties, including BASC, the Scottish Countryside Alliance, and Scottish Land & Estates, said the report would mean “seismic” change for grouse moors.
