The solo exhibition entitled ‘Volume’ by the furniture designer Seo Jeonghwa was held at Gana Art Hannam from Jan. 23 to Feb. 17. He is well known for using materials that are not normally used in furniture design. Made of disparate materials such as basalt, brass, cork, and acrylic, his furniture pieces offer interesting visual and tactile experience to the audience. In this exhibition, a total of 18 furniture pieces and 20 drawings will be displayed. These include his major work entitled Material Container that was exhibited at the London Design Festival, along with new works on the theme of light and volume. As an international monthly architecture journal, SPACE strives each month to feature works of architecture, plentiful in their uniqueness; from the individuality of contemporary Korean architecture to the current innovative shifts in international contemporary architecture. In this spirit, all domestic and international works of architecture submitted to SPACE as feature proposals will undergo the SPACE Peer Review System, in order to uphold a more diverse, professional and fair system of judgment when selecting featured works. The SPACE Peer Review Pool is composed of architects and critics, representative of the current Korean architecture scene, with reviews qualitatively and quantitatively verified. The Park Maintenance Office is a practical building where elderly workers wash, rest, and eat. It also includes spaces for storage, a woodshop, and a prep area. One of the many practical requests was to allow freedom of movement of ‘three 1-ton trucks with water tanks and a forklift’ within the very limited lot. This specific request sparked the architect’s imagination: a floating upper floor that would free up the ground floor. A -shaped mass on the upper level resting on a -shaped mass of the ground level allows for one corner to cantilever without any columns for 10m. In this building built with limited budget, the powerful structural expression of the floating corner is its sole architectural moment. Min Joung-Ki has been defined as a Minjung artist. Minjung art was a South Korea political and populist art movement. As a founding member of ‘Reality and Utterance’, which led artistic attitudes in Minjung in the 1980s, he participated in various exhibitions such as the ‘Foundation Exhibition’(1980), a show known as the ‘candlelight exhibition’ and in ‘City and View’(1981), as well as the ‘15 Years of Minjung Art’ (1994) and ‘Reinstatement of Realism’ (2016). Although he has not revealed strong nationalistic colours or tendencies towards protest like other Minjung artists, a series of historical connections has offered reasonable basis for calling him a Minjung artist. Beginning in 2019, Seoul Metropolitan Govemment (SMG) is initiating a system entitled the ‘Seoul Community Architect’. This derives from, and is an expansion of, the system operating the Seoul Public Architect as a part of public architecture business. The new system will promote one architect per each neighbourhood (dong), to oversee each designated community’s architectural and environmental projects. The main roles of the Seoul Community Architect are as follows: providing consultation on projects of public architecture and spatial and environmental design, planning for local activities such as house repairs and community activists, coordinating public and private projects, promoting demonstration projects, and developing the map of the community’s public space based on field studies. On Jan. 22, Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG) announced that the winning proposal in the tentatively named Mangu-ri Park Welcome Center is ‘Merry Cemetery’ by Jeong Jaeheon (professor, Kyunghee University) and MONO Architects. Located in between Jungnang-gu, Seoul, and Guri, Gyeonggido, Mangu-ri Park is a modern historic site that was used as a cemetery during Japanese colonial rule. The site was repurposed as a public park, a project that began in the 1990s. The design competition was part of that continuing effort. The Welcome Center will take charge of cemetery management, information on cemetery grounds, and convenience facility support. Five domestic teams who applied to the contest were screened by six judges including architect Yoo Kerl (principal, iArc) and other architecture and landscape experts. In regeneration projects, updating the old buildings to meet the current regulations often entails erasing everything that is attractive about the building by introducing new insulation and fire-retardant paint. This conflict sparked the architect’s imagination. If there is a way to completely separate the old from the new, is it not okay for the old building to be left untouched? Cosmo 40 features an extension in the shape of a continuous ring that has been inserted into a 40-year-old deserted factory building. This ring-shaped volume mainly acts as lobbies and circulations which supports creative use of the old factory space. When the extension enters the old factory on the 3rd floor, it is supported by new column bundles placed around the original factory columns. This structural independence liberates the old…

I propose that the representational patterns apparent in the work of the architect Yang Soo-in and his design group Lifethings is analogous to the pattern of description, performed by those that engage in the critique of architectural work. This seems evident, at least, in three of Yang’s recent projects, which are covered here. I will discuss in detail how they are analogous shortly, but I should first mention that this critical and descriptive quality that permeates Yang’s work relates to how he conceives his own work ultimately as a problem-solving process, and also, especially, as his intention leans heavily towards conceptual clarity. This is not unrelated to his past experience as a studio instructor at architecture design studios, where one has to consistently exercise rigorous critical assessment of one’s work.…

Tchunmo Nam’s solo exhibition entitled ‘Tchunmo Nam’ presents the series Spring, Beam, and Strokes, presenting the audience with an opportunity to embrace the artist’s works at a glance. When one enters the exhibition hall, the choppy waves rise and fall. From a distance, equally spaced curves appear like they were drawn on a canvas painted in blue. A closer look reveals that the curves are three-dimensional objects. Like a domino laid on the floor, small pieces were sequentially laid on the canvas and formed each curve. This is Tchunmo Nam’s work entitled Spring 0101, designed in a genre named Sculptural Painting that is on the boundary between painting and sculpture. The Seoul Auction Gangnam Center opened its doors in Sinsa-dong, Gangnam-gu, in Jan. This 13-storey building with five basement floors was designed by the French architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte. The exterior was designed to feature copper metal and the interior is a duplex structure with openness. Jean-Michel Wilmotte has also designed the Seoul Auction headquarters and Gana Art Center in Pyeongchang-dong. Unlike the headquarters, which is solely used for auctions, the Gangnam Center has been planned to accommodate various purposes. On Feb. 1, Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG) announced that MELIKE ALTINISIK ARCHITECTS had been chosen as the winner of the Robot Science Museum International Design Competition. The judging committee conducted two rounds of screening to select the winning proposal. Five teams out of a total of 47 teams were selected at the first round of screening. The second round was carried out with design proposal presentations and interviews of the five teams. To ensure just and transparent judging, the second round process was disclosed to the oublic for the first time in design competitions held by SMG. Clear Solution,Variety of Architecture: Lifethings Yang Soo-in has shown his resourcefulness, wit, and skill as a storyteller through his diverse range of works. He does not hesitate striking up conversations with others, and proposes the most relevant architectural solutions by sticking to the situations and problems at hand. Either because of this character, or because of an attitude that perceives the present moment ‘as the time to ask for more’, Yang’s architecture always elicits different solutions that cannot be grouped under a singular concept. The client’s desire to ‘tan on the roof’ gave us a clue when translating a ‘sloped roof’, mandated by the district design guideline, answering with a U-shaped roof rather than a pitched one. The client’s request for bricks on the U-shaped elevation sparked the architect’s imagination. Why are bricks, sometimes so elaborate that robots have to lay them, always laid parallel to the ground and cut when they meet diagonal roof lines? In masonry construction, corners are laid out first, then the surface between the two corners are filled in. In Wirye Artist’s Studio residence, the first brick layer is laid parallel to the ground and the following layers gradually follow the curve of the U-shaped roofline, making the corners appear to lift up.
