Shaped blocks and pieces of furniture come together in a pristine pastel-toned space. Ever since Seogyo-dong Community Service Center was repurposed as Seoul Art Space Seogyo in 2009, creative spaces reusing idle or abandoned facilities in Seoul have begun to appear. These facilities, including artist-in-residence schemes, were created as a result of two corresponding interests – artists desperately seeking work spaces and the government’s desire to regenerate particular areas. However, under bureaucratic management, which prioritizes legal procedures, the creative activities of free-spirited artists are restricted. Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG) hosted ‘The 10th Seoul Art Space International Symposium’ on Nov. 29, 2018 in order to address the current status of creative spaces and discuss improvement measures. The Design Competition for New Government Complex Sejong has become a hot topic in the architectural field. The winner of the competition was announced on 31 October 2018, but the head of the jury of the international design competition announced his resignation in protest at the screening result. The location in which Munui House and Geuluteogi Church has settled is in a town that was moved from its original spot to allow space for the construction of the Daecheong Lake. After 30 years the acclimated houses and lush vegetation come together to create a harmonious landscape. The owners of this building, a couple, chose this place as the location to live out their remaining days after finishing work in the city. They asked for a residence where a house and a church could be designed and aligned together in the same space. This composition required a small church to be built with the residence at its centre. 3+3+3 This house is a three-story house with three gardens, designed as a dwelling for three generations. The site runs along the range of a small, densely wooded hill. This small hill became the most crucial element when determining the layout of the house. The house was aligned to the shape of the site and placed parallel to the axis towards the hill, in order to draw the hill’s natural flow into the house. Moreover, the end of the sight line, which binds the long-lined spaces together, was always directed towards the hill. Spaces that are divided into few parts here overlap, going beyond the simple boundary between interior and exterior, but they never block the view of each other. Yongsan Garrison is slowly opening its doors to the public. Although the high, barbwired walls remain, with ‘U.S. Military Facility’ and ‘No Trespassing’ signs impressed upon them, the garrison, which was closed to the public for roughly 110 years, now provides a space that people can access – the Yongsan Park Gallery which opened on Nov. 30, 2018. The history of Yongsan Garrison dates back to 1904, when Imperial Japan forcibly occupied the Yongsan area during the Russo-Japanese War. After Korea’s liberation and upon U.S.-Japanese agreement, the U.S. took over Yongsan Garrison which became the headquarters of United States Forces Korea (USFK). An unfamiliar structure has been installed in the corridor of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA) Gwacheon. Between the white walls and amidst its ambient light, the materials of industry such as pipes, plywood boards, and red lighting are placed in the corridors of the museum, attracting the visitors’ attention. It was designed by Seo Seungmo (principal, Samuso Hyojadong) and called ‘Hypothesis Scaffolding Street’. This work began with a hypothesis to turn a corridor into a street. ‘streets’ and ‘roads’ have similar meanings, but the nuances of each word are very different. If roads are made for their function, streets may be created by necessity, and other behaviours may occur. The ‘International Seminar on Pedestrian Safety 2018’ was held in the annex building of the Central Government Complex on Dec. 12. The houses of Jeong Jaeheon (professor, Kyung Hee University) appear as though they have always been part of the landscape. They don’t look artificial but entirely natural. When one looks carefully inside, however, one can observe how meticulous the architect’s working process has been: His attention to detail in his newly-produced materials, his provision of stable measurements, and his adjustment in the types and the amount of light is nothing short of extraordinary. Laurent Salomon once described these properties as ‘the manifestation of mathematical emotion’. There once was a time when I used a two metres long, foldable wooden ruler. It was a zigzag device that had several parts, painted in yellow and with measurement markings, connected by pins, allowing the ruler to be unfolded and extended to two metres. I remember using this ruler in various, playful ways. In architecture, a zigzag style changes spatial form and adds liveliness to connections. On both sides, interval gaps are created in between slanted angles. This brings about the effect of securing spatial flexibility and creating relations to the surroundings by gradually drawing the building back. Additionally, spreading the masses forms difference and delays in spatial relations. We can recognise the different usage of the zigzag in terms of apparatus and architecture. The Seoul Foreign School (SFS), located on a striking hilltop site that overlooks Yeonhui-dong, is a campus where new educational concepts are emerging. This cluster of historic and contemporary buildings spanning four decades offers an archeological viewpoint of our changing times. ‘Efficient’ double-loaded corridor buildings from an era where learning by rote was the standard have been juxtaposed with the recently completed High School designed by the New York firm Ennead Architects, where spacious informal learning areas are as abundant as the classrooms themselves. On Jan. 1, 1984, Nam June Paik’s media artwork Good Morning, Mr. Orwell, featuring an optimistic vision for the future, was televised live via satellite in New York and Paris. People were increasingly able to see artworks at home on their televisions without going to a museum. This project was regarded as an important event, showcasing the possibility offered by the activity of sharing artworks with a large number of people simultaneously. During the two-day journey to Cheongju, Gwangju, Guri, and Pangyo, accompanied by Jeong Jaeheon, I was able to observe his recent projects and to talk about his works. While traveling the long distance together, we were able to share even non-architecture related conversation, almost close to a casual chat. Since both of us are of a similar age, both spent our childhood in the countryside, later moved to a city and went to middle school and high school in unfamiliar circumstances, we were able to relate a lot of shared experiences. In the 2000 – 2001, as part of the artist residency programme at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) PS1, New York, Yoon Youngseok exhibited a plastic bag containing images of an resurrecting a dead pig shortly after its birth by artificial insemination. The Piggy, Piggy Plantation project raises the issue of cloning life and artificial production from a gruesome and intense perspective from which one cannot avert their gaze.
