The revised plan of Article 41 in the Framework Act on the Construction Industry, which reduces the scope of direct construction by the client, was enacted on June 27. Wood structure has been widely used, in low-level detached housing and also in more complex buildings that reach up to ten floors. Following this trend, the domestic wood industry and the architectural scene have made significant efforts to the revisit existing interests in and understandings of wooden structure architecture. For instance, the Architectural Policy Association of Korea (APAK) hosted their Academic Seminar under the title, ‘Improving Policies and Systems to Promote the Wood Construction Industry’ on June 28. By the early 1970s, criticism and resistance grew stronger against the repeated forms and extended scales that had been widely promoted at the height of architectural modernism. Architects began showing interest in the form of a collective entity appearing as a cluster of housing units, and in the form and function of a space that serves as a medium to create a collective form. Their interest was not just confined to form but also extended to the issues of human community and social interaction. This issue will introduce six projects that have transformed the paradigm of ‘collective form’. The pop-up store represents the work of Younhyun, which has executed numerous projects in order to become closer to the general public, the Garagegage, which sells furniture intended to simplify life, and of Uhjjudah Bookshop, which explores unantscipated bonds between people and between their readers and readers and between readers and their books. The Busan Museum of Art (MoCA Busan) opened on June 16, marking the opening of the second public art museum in Busan following the Busan Museum of Art. Only the naive who learn from indirect experience would believe that materials such as writing, photography, 3D scans are enough to preserve the memory of a place. Memory requires physical space. On July 16, the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia came to an end with France winning the championship. The national stadium of this World Cup is the Luzhniki Stadium, located in Moscow’s city centre. It is the largest stadium in the country, hosting various sports competitions for more than 50 years, such as the 1980 Olympics. Russia renovated this stadium and used it as the national stadium for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. At Kassel Documenta in 1992, the art world was turned upside down by a young artist in his thirties. Yook Keunbyung was only the second Korean to participate in the world famous quinquennial, after Nam June Paik. In terms of citizenship, Yook Keunbyung was actually the first Korean. He installed The Sound of Landscape + Eye for Field = Rendezvous (1992) in the middle of Kassel’s Museum Fridericianum Square. Facing the entrance to the building, he erected a tomb covered in earth and integrated a video of a roving eye at the centre of this rounded mound. The exhibition ‘Erwin Wurm: One Minute Forever’, on show at Hyundai Card Storage, is Erwin Wurm’s first solo exhibition in Korea.
