Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain may have become popular after the construction of Jean Nouvel’s marvelous glass building in Montparnasse in 1994. Onground Gallery have selected Dutch architects MVRDV as the ninth artists for their ‘Small Houses / Villages’ series, which began in 2014. This exhibition introduces Balancing Barn, a guesthouse in Thorington, United Kingdom, and Didden Village, a blue house in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The two projects, completed in 2007 and 2010 respectively, are familiar to people who know MVRDV. Byoung Cho (principal, BCHO Architects Associates) explains the purpose of this exhibition: ‘Though two projects have a simple gable roof in common, they are quite interesting in terms of structure, materials, and details. The public lecture and ‘conversation with students’ of Rafael Moneno, a world famous Spanish architect, took place at Seoul National University (SNU) on June 8 and 9. The Pritzker prize winner of 1996, born in 1937, has carried out his practice and teaching in architectural work covering ancient and historical places and modern sophistication. He visited Korea for the first time and gave a much anticipated lecture in the architectural world. About 70 days prior to the UIA 2017 Seoul World Architects Congress (Seoul Congress), a variety of events have been scheduled to take place. The organising committee of this event held a poster competition ‘Imagine your Seoul’, aimed at middle and high school students, and the exhibition ‘The Self-Evolving City of the Future’ is scheduled to take place from Sep. 3. These images of a desirable future for Seoul offering a story of Seoul’s past, present and future can be submitted to the poster competition, and the theme ‘Attractive Seoul’ can be freely expressed with clear content. Not many would like to walk along a sidewalk that is plagued with fumes and exposed to the heat or cold. We tend to prefer strolling through a park filled with greenery, using an underpass or travelling in a car. On 20 May, Seoullo7017 opened, and was immediately caught up in a lot of controversy. Although it cost 60 billion KRW, it is tainted by poor quality finishing, narrow paths, insufficient green areas, glaring concrete floors and night lighting that make sidewalks a better choice. Watching such problems provoked the question of for what should one choose to walk this walkway.  Seoullo7017 is definitely something new to us. Trees and people create a flow across the sky, while plants in a circular concrete planter are arranged in Korean alphabetical order. When night falls, they create a blue stream that looks like a river running through the buildings. Coupled with its questionable appearance, Seoullo7017 is an unfamiliar project to us in a number of ways, and so were the ideas of transforming an overpass into a pedestrian walkway, the regeneration plan for the overpass and its surrounding neighborhood and the execution strategy to encourage public participation. The project has been implemented contrary to other opinion that advocated the demolition of the overpass, and now it is facing sharp-edged criticism. Modernist Shared Space Discussions surrounding shared spaces are often concerned with a process of conversion from spaces in the public realm to spaces tailored specifically for the community. A generalized, equalized, and standardised ‘publicness’ cannot respond to local particularities or conditions, and it is only if we understand publicness as a theory based upon a multilayered and complex appreciation of local communities that we can secure actions appropriate for the daily lives of the local residents. In other words, publicness must concern itself with user-centred individual conditions, including those of the disabled and elderly. A sense of publicness based on the facts of daily lives will inevitably create community spaces centred on the inhabitants and users. In June 2017, under the strange name ‘Seoullo7017’, a skybridge emerged to run across the heart of Seoul. While crossing it on foot, not by car, looking down at the scenery below of Namdaemun Gate and Toegyero, instead of looking up buildings, presents an unfamiliar yet interesting experience. This changes the speed and perspective of experiencing the city. The regeneration of Seoul Station Overpass not only brings about change to the cityscape but also stimulates the senses of people through different mediums like culture, art and space. Liberty Lounge, the first major work by the architect Greg Park and Song Sanghun, is located on the east side of Dosan Park, where cafes, shops, and residential buildings co-exist. With its impressive metal mesh-curtain façade, this work is the result of rebuilding a two-storey box-shaped steel-frame structure with a courtyard. The two architects tried to retain the characteristics of the existing structure. They expanded the main structure and its circulation to three stories and introduced a new lounge bar, live hall, and underground VIP lounge. The main point behind the design was to create a new private clubhouse programme on the upper level. The Atelier Hermès exhibition was first introduced in Korea in November, 2006 by Daniel Buren, a French conceptual artist, and has been relaunched under the title ‘O philoi, oudeis philos’ in May, 2017, in commemoration of the reopening of Maison Hermès Dosan Park. The exhibition runs from May 20 to July 23, and aims to shed new light on the past decade of Atelier Hermès, which advocates for ‘art as an engaging part of life rather than art itself’, and picture what the next ten years will bring. The title ‘O philoi, oudeis philos’ is a quote by ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle. Young and talented artists such as Kim Minae, Kim Yunha, Kim Heecheon, Park Kiljong, Baek Kungho, and Yoon Hyangro participated in this exhibition with their intriguing collaborative works.…

The Gwanghwamun Square’s design proposal was unveiled on May 31 during the open debate sponsored by Gwanghwamun Forum, a committee consisting of experts in the fileds of architecture, history, and urban planning. According to the proposal, Yulgok-ro and Sejong-ro could change into underground roads. Open spaces will be created in place. The palace steps, a pair of Haetae statues, and other historical monuments will be restored. Renovating Gwanghwamun Square will, without a doubt, deliver immense historic value as this area holds significant meaning for our people. Architectural Animism_ Water lies on a solid foundation, but in Kim Tschang-Yeul’s painting this bond is contradictory. It is not moist, and not dry. The contradiction is that it never withdraws on dry soil and it reacts to light, and it is also paused. A drop of water can normally slop, but here it cannot. It shines, but is passive. It is instinctively a meditation, but it absorbs nearby sound. Water cannot stay on paper or sand. According to the theory of the Five Elements, soil and water are incompatible. Adam Zagajewski is a poet born in Poland in 1945. In his birth year, the Second World War ended and the great powers drew new borders in conference with one another. Without knowing the reason, he and his family were kicked out of their home, and they had to move to a new place. The same thing happened again and again, even after he had grown up. He was a dissident poet and his books were banned in Poland. He wandered around foreign cities throughout his life.
