A solo exhibition of Young-Hae Chang Heavy Industries, who has been presenting animation works with text and sound, opened on 6 Jan. at Art Sonje Center. The exhibition is composed of video installations, web pieces, leaflet, and banner works on the facade and the rear of the museum. The video installation works are the main part of exhibition. From the 1st floor to the 3rd floor, the works are installed one on a floor. The theme of the first floor is ‘Family’. In late November of 2016, two newly prepared parks near Geumcheon-gu Office opened to the public. In the 1151 Doksan 1-dong area, an army camp was stationed for more than 50 years, but now a commercial and business complex alongside new urban infrastructure have been introduced to the site of 191,689m2 following the announcement of the plan in 2006 and the relocation of the army camp to Icheon, Gyeonggi-do in 2010. Roads, parks, cultural and sports facilities have been created from 29.9% of the Contributed Acceptance. Geumnarae Central Park and Doha Park are among the results of this programme. Mille-Feuille de Camélia Arko Art Center Dec. 9, 2016 – Feb. 12, 2017 This exhibition first caught my eye because of its title, which incited a sense of curiosity and a sense of nostalgia, mainly arising from the exhibition leaflet’s quotation concerning the Blue Marble Game (a Korean version of Monopoly based on world cities rather than locations within cities). Not only had I never before thought of the combination of camellias and mille-feuille, but I was also pleasantly surprised to realise that in the very familiar game of Blue Marble it was only possible to get to Taipei from Seoul by taking a full-fledged route around the world. The demolition of the Ahyeon high-level road (2014) and Seodaemun high-level road (2015) were two events that realty changed the cityscape of Seoul. Since the start of high-level road constructions in the 1970s, a total of 101 high-level roads were built in Seoul alone, and stood their ground ever since to become safety and aesthetic degradation concerns. Starting with the removal of the Ddeokjeon high-level road in 2002, a total of 18 roads were demolished, with an additional 8 planned for dismantlement this year. The participation of the citizens at the people’s walk event a day before the removal of Korea’s first high-level road in Ahyeon was more than sufficient to tell us how attached we have become to the high-level road. Gwangju City and Gwangju Biennale announced the start of the Gwangju FollyⅢ. The Gwangju Folly, as a part of the series of urban regeneration projects, started from 2011 in order to regenerate the fading old city center, including not just the ornamental roles, but also the functional roles within public spaces. The Gwangju FollyⅢ is themed ‘Folly & Everyday Life—Taste & Beauty’ and is comprised of largely five sections (View Folly, Gwangju Dutch Folly, Cook Folly, FunPun Folly, and Mini Folly) and eleven posts will be installed around Sansu-dong and Chungjang-ro. An invitation exhibition of three young artists had opened at Gallery Hyundai. ‘Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening’ from Dec. 7, 2016 – Jan. 15, 2017 concentrated points of various relationship and communication. The title was from a poem of Robert Frost in 1922, Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening. Standing Workers No. 17 of Yang Jung Uk greeted the visitor at the entrance of gallery. Yang created kinetic sculptures with analog sensibility using wood, motor and thread and put a piece of independent narrative into them. The work gets life from others and runs by itself.
