On Sep. 5, the 20th memorial ceremony of the death of Chang Sea Young was held at SPACE Group. A religious group with strong voluntary bond within the Korea Military Academy, a closed community with binding continuity, is an optimal audience for discovery of a building’s hidden religious meanings over time. This two-story building takes the form of a circular religious space on top of a rectilinear everyday space. On the first floor, functional spaces (offices, bathrooms, showers, mechanical areas and storage) are condensed in the middle whereas the spaces of practice (seminar rooms and individual prayer rooms) protrude out in three directions, allowing free access from all directions and emphasizing the importance of practicing the religion within everyday life. Park Kilyong (honorary professor, Kookmin University) Over the past few years, there have been several exhibitions dedicated to Korean modern architects. In line with that, the Kimchungup Museum, built in 2013, has continued this legacy of collection, research and exhibition activities. Anish Kapoor, the representative artist in the British Pavilion at the 44th Venice Biennale and the Turner Prize winner in 1991, is returning to Korea for the first time after his last exhibition at LEEUM, Samsung Museum of Art four years ago. Kapoor’s 19 new works, which lead visitors on a road of meditative contemplation through flawless stainless steel sculptures and fathomless colours, were presented from Aug. 31 at Kukje Gallery’s exhibition ‘Gathering Clouds’. As an automobile event that shows off classic cars with price tags exceeding millions of dollars, Hyundai Motor showcased the concept car from its luxury sedan brand ‘GENESIS’, which caught the attention of many of the richest Americans. The Fanbot is an attempt to develop a unique Korean internet and mobile culture, by sending real-time cheering messages to baseball broadcasts and out into the physical realm. When Hancomm, the PR agency for the Korean professional baseball club Hanwha Eagles, approached us in 2014 with what was left over from their marketing and fan relations project budget, we proposed constructing a physical presence for the fans who could not attend the game and were cheering the team online. Taking the cue from the unique Korean culture of sending SMS or on-line chat messages to TV programmes in real time, sharing opinions with other viewers, we created a platform where fans can send in their cheering messages with various types of internet-connected devices. Currently only the second volume is in existence and is kept at the National Library of France. Bringing together excerpts from the various teachings of Buddhist monks, necessary for the realisation of the key points of Buddhist virtue, Jikji brings into focus the meaning of good-natured living, or in other words, enlightenment regarding the mind of Buddha. Purchased in the late 19th century by Colin de Placy, the French minister to Korea, the book passed through several different hands before being donated to the National Library of France. Kwon Minho is an illustrator and draughtsman. While drawing is conventionally considered to amount to the rough sketches that lead to a completed work of art, Kwon Minho elevates drawing into an independent visual medium and a channel of self-realisation, using pencils and charcoal to draw on oilpaper. By borrowing the architectural drawing methods of exposing hidden parts by turning ruled straight lines sideways, Kwon Minho’s art world immediately became more conspicuous and abundant. The Wall of Remembrance is a small memorial placed inside the Forest of Peace – a forest dedicated to victims and the missing persons of the MV Sewol tragedy, which took place on 16 April 2014. It was my wish to create a space, both secluded and private, where a visitor could be alone for a moment, take time to read the messages left by the families and friends of the victims, and to feel the immense love that is still etched in their hearts. The wall’s exterior surface houses 304 folds. Through those folds, 304 imaginary lines come into being, symbolizing and commemorating each victim. For this project, I eliminated the column, which is the centre piece of the Dom-ino structure, and attempted to compose the living environment by using the wall, the most structural of architectural languages. In the past, the wall used to block communication between spaces because of its structural limitations. I tried to transform the ‘wall from the past’ and to create a transformed experience and its situation through chronotopic settings. The chronotope is a method that combines space and time through an intersection of axis points and a fusion of various indexes. It ultimately uses the architectural wall as an integration or a continuation, or as simultaneous space in the continuous cast of time, which is an opposite attitude to that of a rupture or division.    Residual Issues from Ihwa Village Last 15 April saw the vandalisation of a stairway mural which once served as the central attraction of the Ihwa Village from an inhabitant of the village. While the incident seems to have been provoked by complaints about noise pollution and littering by tourists, it was also partly due to an accumulated disdain over the inconsistent increase of real estate prices and limitations placed on the use of buildings in residential areas.
