On Apr. 29 the Young Architects Forum Korea Conference (Young Architects Forum) Vol. 11 opened under a glamorous atmosphere. There, Jae K. On May 7, Architecture in Asia International Symposium hosted by Asia Culture Center (ACC). This symposium was the starting programme of ‘Library Study’, ACC collected resources relational programme, and its theme was ‘Creative Productions: Productive Possibilities Between the Formal and Informal Urban Fabric of Asian Cities’. Panels discussed on how modern and contemporary architecture adapted to the environmental changes, produced spaces creatively, and localized. The symposium consisted of presentations and discussions that examine the forms of Asian urban architecture. Yehre Suh (professor, Seoul National University) presented a conflict structure between form and non-form with keywords of scale, velocity and density among the factors a city has. ‘Incomplete Mutation’ — Between Collective Memory and History Les Halles in Paris has been at the commercial crossroads of Paris since the Middle Ages, as the site of stock exchange as well as of an important marketplace. The district was radically transformed over the years due to population increase, while maintaining a delicate coexistence with several landmarks and monuments nearby. The recent evolution of the sector saw the displacement of markets and demolition of the pavilions. In the nineteenth century, Émile Zola famously described Les Halles as the the belly of Paris, but its image as the ‘pit of Paris’ took hold after the 1970s due to the underground development of the RER station and shopping mall construction. TWO PERSPECTIVES OF PUBLICNESS, ARTISTIC AND SOCIAL Talking about ‘publicness’ when observing the projects of architects has two main perspectives. One is the publicness of the project process and the other is the publicness of the social implications that the project has. While the former concentrates on the artistic attitude of the architect, the latter emphasizes the common theme and embedded possibility of social communication. Seoul’s Dosan-daero contains an array of global beauty and fashion luxury brands and is now home to Sulhwasoo’s new flagship store, Korea’s largest beauty brand flagship store. The design concept of the flagship store is the ‘Lantern’. Lighting up in the darkness and guiding the way as if with a lantern, the concept embodies the wisdom of Asian aesthetics and signifies the illumination of beauty. The golden brass material which wraps around the inside and outside of the building and the interior set to different themes on every floor creates harmony between the spaces and presents the feeling of a beautiful and harmonious journey from the past to the present and future. One can easily find the graveyard near the farm. The graveyards are located on both the western and the eastern sides, and even on the north side nearer the backyard of the house. It is uncommon to witness such placement in our culture, where the site of the living and the dead is distinctly separated. We became curious about why the building owner chose to place the house near the graveyard. Also, we were curious about the name ‘The Korean Dandelion Farm’, because dandelions are usually known for their yellow colouring. Moreover, because it is named ‘farm’, we thought of the site as a manor with a large-scale garden. However, we could not find any Korean dandelions anywhere near the house. It made us even more curious about the name.…

Finally, the construction efforts for the Eungbong Bridge to widen it into six lanes has been completed after a long journey of seven years from October 2008, partially opening four lanes to traffic on August 31 2015. The eye-catching scene laid out in the press material released that day detailed a red public structure, which was actually a sound barrier. Seemingly unfinished, the upper aluminum framework heading towards the arch of the Eungbong Bridge was not covered but had a transparent board on the frame which was looking at the opposite side of the Eungbong three-way intersection. Not even a great architect was brought into being alone. There is also an all surrounding, ever-present support. Le Corbusier, the master of Modernism architecture was no exception. Charles-Édouard Jeanneret, known as Le Corbusier, also had an assistant, his cousin, Pierre Jeanneret. Cooperating as a partner architect, he was good at realising the ideas of Le Corbusier who liked drawing a big picture. From the opening of the office in 1922, two Jeannerets were mutually indispensable. Celebrating the 10th anniversary of the winning international Master Plan Competition for the Public Administration Town (PAT) in Multifunctional Administrative City (MAC), HAEAHN Architecture (HAEAHN) held an exhibition in K’ARTS Studio Myeong-Dong from 15 to May 21 2016. This exhibition reviews the process of materializing PAT over the past ten years viewed through HAEAHN’s eye. The process and results enacted by HAEAHN reveals changes to the original masterplan and the realised idea of masterplan in the design of two building groups out of five which were carried out by HAEAHN. The inauguration ceremony of the Canopy, the first stage of the redevelopment of Les Halles in downtown Paris was held on 6 April. Hoardings promoting the rebirth of Les Halles under the guidance of the phrase of Le Nouveau Coeur de Paris were already everywhere in Paris. But the site was still messy due to ongoing construction work and many people were taking pictures of the Canopy on the observation platform. Soldiers and policemen armed with machine guns were patrolling not only the site of the inauguration ceremony but also whole area of Les Halles due to the recent terror attacks in Paris, which generated a kind of tension here. We—the Milanese studio Piuarch—realises the new Givenchy flagship store in Seoul, in close collaboration with the art director of the Maison, Riccardo Tisci. The store is housed in a building located in the thriving shopping district of Gangnam-gu. The boutique has an area of about 400m2 on three levels and offers an exhibition of women's fashion, accessories, and men’s fashion. The building features a peculiar graphic façade, with a hyper-minimalist interior that reflects the themes and the allure of the brand. Designed as a sort of enclosure—a second embossed skin as an expression of an urban identity—the façade is meant to evoke the distinctive tailoring ‘T-cut’ that characterizes the style of the French brand. Saâdane Afif’s solo exhibition ‘Quoi? – L’Éternité’ opened on May 10 at Atelier Hermès. That starting point is both a line from the poet Rimbaud, and lyrics written by fellow artist Lili Reynaud–Dewar, commissioned by Afif for a solo exhibition in 2004. Saâdane Afif’s works, ‘delegation and recycling’. His methodology, which can be explained through the concept of ‘Collaboration and Re-completion’, relies on the new possibilities created by the intervention of people and place. This is the question eloquently addressed by the current exhibition in the architecture galleries at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, ‘A Japanese Constellation: Toyo Ito, SANAA and Beyond’. Burberry’s first flagship store in Korea comprises an impressive total of 13 floors and has become a new landmark in the area. In particular, the presence of the gold façade utilizing light and shadow dominates the vicinity. Inspired by the woven Gabardine fabric form of a Burberry trench coat, the building’s metal screen was engraved with embossment and texture. When the LED lights inserted into the skin are turned on at night a gold-checkered pattern wraps around the entire building. These kinds of sites often speak for themselves—stimulating the imagination of the architect, wanting him/her to capture its essence. Paradoxically, one has to conceal the scenery in order to capture it.
