Attitude_ For the son who departed his hometown to live in Seoul, his old birthplace home began to feel like a shabby place that only causes trouble for his old widowed mother. The project started with a request to find a more appropriate site near to the old house. However, his elderly mother did not want to leave the old site of the house. She wanted to spend the rest of her life on the land where she established her family, raised her children, and built relationships with the neighbours. Sharjah is one of the seven emirates of the United Arab Emirates along with Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Ras al-Khaimah, Ajman, Umm al-Quwain, and Fujairah. The March Meeting of Sharjah is an international culture and arts symposium held every March since 2008 that encourages the participation of artists, curators, journalists, and researchers. On 4 April, at 4pm, a long queue formed in front of the exhibition space Audio Visual Pavilion in Tongui-dong. How could it be that about a hundred people had turned up at this exact spot, as if they were all in some mutual agreement? An exhibition of ‘Small House / Neighbourhood’ held in Onground Gallery introduces House K located in Espoo, Finland, as the first show of the year. It is a housing work for a family of four in a detached residential district, conducted by the Finnish firm Sanaksenaho Architects Ltd. in 2014. The chief curator of the exhibition, Byoung Cho (principal, BCHO Architects Associates) has stated that the reason for their selection was that ‘House K shows clear construction details along with neat design vocabulary rather than pursuing strong and reckless questions.’ Presenting the work through photography, plans and architectural models is the same as that of existing exhibitions, but, this time, the show features a one to one scale replica of a part of House K. Long House in Beomeo-dong, outside of downtown Daegu, is located in the central part of a new residential area built in 1970 – 80s. It is adjacent to the area of a detached house, which is residential type generated by new lifestyles and changes to dwelling methods since the 1970s. At that time, new types of detached houses like Saemaeul House and French House have replaced traditional and modern houses, and various residential types such as apartments and multiplex houses started to emerge. Is Eurasia still considered a continental landmass that exists today? Or, perhaps still an available concept? On 25 November of last year at ACC Creation, Space 3 at the Asia Culture Center (ACC) in Gwangju, the ‘Imagining New Eurasia Project’ commenced with a specific question and a definitive response: ‘Where exactly is the physical demarcation between Asia and Europe? Is it the Ural Mountains or Caucasus Mountains?...The dividing lines of Eurasia are merely a cultural construct... The bracket Eurasia is merely a cultural construct, and history confirms this.’ An open competition for exhibition works was conducted as part of this project, before the show, calling for participants to ‘imagine that Eurasia has been completely destroyed, possibly as the result of religious, ethnic and national wars, or even by nuclear war.…

A Summary of New Trends Since 2005 ‘This exhibition does not equally represent graphic design produced in Seoul. Photographer Sungjin Song’s 5th solo exhibition ‘There’, which opened at O’NewWall E’JUHEON in Seonngbuk-dong and ran from Apr. 8 – 30, juxtaposes two opposing sets of ideas. Light and darkness (shadows), verticality and horizontality, high-rise structures and old dwellings, and so on, these multiple gazes fixed on each other collide in the landscape of the exhibition, which while ironic, are poetic and tranquil. The peculiar atmosphere flowing through the hanok exhibition space is quite a curiosity. The desires of capitalism can be read in the flat landscapes created through the artist’s overlapping skyscrapers. ‘Pedagogy and Place,’ located in the atrium of Paul Rudolph’s Art and Architecture building at Yale University, presents a history of the architecture school through the lens of the buildings it has occupied. Photographs of spaces where architecture students have worked over the years, reproductions of student work, and short videos detailing the history of the school are on display. The exhibition was curated by the school’s dean, Robert A.M. Stern, and one of his employees and former students, Jimmy Stamp. ‘I want to build a house to give as a gift to myself’: this is the dream of the client, who, for 20 years coped with intensive work, only taking two days off a year. Woo Hyunjung (Woo): You use a module, which means a basic measurement and unit for spatial division, as the basis of your work. You said an artist him/herself is one of modules in the social relationship. What is the meaning of ‘module’ across all of your work? Byoungho Kim (Kim): I don’t think that an artwork is produced only according to the artist’s own will. Different machines and engineers who handle them produce the parts of artwork through a specialized production system, not in an atelier. I interpret them as a single ‘part’. Incessant Growth The 4th Art Basel Hong Kong was extravagantly held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center on 24–26 March.
