Along a herringbone brick walkway at Rowan Oak, soaring red cedar trees stand sentinel—a picturesque platoon forever entwined with the history and ambience of William Faulkner’s home in northern Mississippi. One of the only examples of antebellum architecture still standing in the city, this 1840s Greek Revival nestled amid serene woodlands is where Faulkner wrote such acclaimed works as Absalom, Absalom!; Go Down, Moses; and A Fable, winner of the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award. One of my favorite times of year is back: porch season! I've never had a day that didn't get a little better in the shade of a veranda, with a hint of breeze and a glass of homemade blackberry lemonade (my go-to summer treat) in hand. MAKES 22 4 cups all-purpose flour ¼ cup baking powder ¼ cup sugar 1¾ cups whole buttermilk, chilled 1½ cups cold salted margarine, cut into 3-inch cubes ½ cup cold salted butter, cut into ½-inch cubes 1. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, place flour, baking powder, and sugar; beat at low speed for 15 seconds.
