As Hurricane Matthew ripped through southwest Haiti in the predawn hours of Oct. 4, 2016, people did their best to find shelter and protect their families. When the storm passed, 500 people had died. The damage to roads, infrastructure and businesses exceeded $2.8 billion. Aid officials estimated up to 80 percent of some areas were destroyed; one government official described the carnage as “total destruction.” But even before the last of the storm winds had died, volunteers of the International Rescue Group were organizing a voyage to provide humanitarian relief via their fleet of sailboats: the 50-foot catamaran Rendezvous Cay, the 97-foot ketch Thunderbird V and the 56-foot ketch Tandemeer. Mike Muessel grew up on Lake Superior in Duluth, Minnesota, the son of a career Coast Guard warrant officer. His family owned a 26- foot wooden launch and a 25-foot wooden sailboat that received heavy use. They moved to Kodiak, Alaska, for a time before landing in Newport, Rhode Island, in 1963. After graduating from Boston’s Northeastern University, Muessel sought to satisfy his nautical wanderlust by sailing and traveling the world. His adventures took him to the Caribbean, the United Kingdom and Afghanistan. On his return, Muessel teamed up with friend Ron Ackman to skipper boat deliveries up and down the East Coast. Mississippi steamboat races, as depicted here, are the stuff of myth, lore and legend. And none is more famous than the Great Race of 1870. The course was 1,100 miles on a winding, twisting river fraught with sandbars, shifting shoals and treacherous snags. The contestants were two of the finest, fastest steamboats ply-ing the “Mighty Mississippi” — with an open rivalry between the two captains in command. Newspapers covered the run-up to the start at New Orleans. The nation was enthralled. Wagers were made, some said to total in the millions of dollars. Seven Volvo Ocean 65s will sail a 45,000-nautical-mile course around the world — the longest in the history of the race. FAST AND FURIOUS Narrow, swift and graceful, Ruweida V is a restored 38-foot RClass sloop designed by Burgess, Swasey & Paine in 1926. A topto- bottom, year-long restoration began in 2011 under the skilled hands at the International Yacht Restoration School in Newport, Rhode Island, where she was replanked, redecked and rerigged. Since her return, Ruweida’s owner has raced her in competitions hosted by the New York Yacht Club, the Museum of Yachting and at Panerai events around Narragansett Bay, where she always finished on the podium. Loren and Lani Hart founded Admiralty Ltd. in 1981 to build two new sailboat designs to be called the Lord Nelson 35 and 41 (named after Great Britain’s most revered naval hero, Horatio Nelson). SKIPJACKS The skipjack workboat was developed in the late 1800s as the successor to the larger schooner-style bugeyes that were used to harvest oysters under sail in the 19th century. Skipjacks are smaller, more maneuverable and are able to work in shallower water than their predecessors. Skipjacks were only permitted to dredge for oysters under sail in Maryland waters until the law was changed in the 1960s. The change in legislation allowed Maryland boats to dredge under power with the assistance of a “yawl,” or push boat, two days a week. Skipjacks are permitted to sail-dredge the other three days of the week. Today, it is rare that captains want to sail-dredge with crews that are unfamiliar with sailing.
