Vented Loops Water flows downhill and will do so even if it must rise first, provided the final level is lower than the initial level and the connecting pipework contains no air. This is called a siphon. Systems with an intake and/or discharge below the waterline have the potential to siphon after pumping ceases and require some means to break the suction and prevent flooding. The most common way to alleviate a siphon when there is a falling column of water is with a vented loop. A valve in the loop opens when the line is not in use and allows air into the hose, breaking the suction of the falling water. Most systems that pump out below the waterline have vented loops. Plunger is perhaps not the best name for a submarine, but it didn’t scare off President Theodore Roosevelt. Plunger was a pioneer, one of the U.S. Navy’s earliest subs. Launched in 1902 out of New Jersey’s Crescent Shipyard, the 64-foot A-Class submarine had been commissioned at the Holland yard in New Suffolk, New York, on Long Island’s north shore. After serving for two years out of Newport, Rhode Island, testing torpedoes and other equipment, Plunger (known as S-22 and renamed A-1) was sent back to the Long Island facility for routine maintenance. New Jersey anglers are challenging the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers over a beach renourishment plan, the latest battle in what has become a worldwide dispute about the use of sand as a natural resource. The New Jersey plan would mine sand from fishing grounds to build a 14-mile line of protective dunes seaward of communities destroyed by Hurricane Sandy. “It’s a massive project,” says Ken Warchal, vice president of the Jersey Coast Anglers Association. “The dunes will be 25 feet high.” The project identifies five sea mounts where dredges would mine almost 10 million cubic yards of sand to build a line of dunes from Manasquan Inlet south to Barnegat Inlet. The storied schooner Yankee was built by the Dutch government in 1897 as Loodschooner 4, a robust vessel that could go out in all kinds of weather and pilot ships to port in the stormy North Sea. Since the 1950s, the schooner has been an eerie underwater presence in a cove in the Bras d’or Lakes of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. In 1989-90, Riley was the watch captain/engineer on Maiden, the first all-women team in the Whitbread Round the World Race (now the Volvo Ocean Race).
