As an ocean research scientist, Bruce Appelgate thought it best to start going green at home, on one of Scripps Institution of Oceanography’s research vessels. Appelgate, the San Diego institution’s associate director, decided to run the 125-foot Robert Gordon Sproul on 100 percent “renewable diesel” fuel from September 2014 to December 2015, a period when the Sproul undertook 39 research and educational missions, put in 89 operational days at sea and covered 14,400 miles. A Hawaiian ocean voyaging canoe is proving it by sailing around the world to demonstrate the art, science and genius of traditional Polynesian navigation — something Heyerdahl never accepted — and its significance in the Pacific. Heyerdahl led the famous 1947 Kon-Tiki expedition in which six men in a balsa-wood raft sailed and drifted from Peru almost 7,000 miles across the Pacific before landing on a reef in the Tuamotu Archipelago. Heyerdahl claimed the voyage proved his theory that Polynesia was settled by prehistoric explorers sailing from South America, in the east. OIL PAINTING BY DON DEMERS A coasting schooner glides on a changing tide past a set of fish weirs perched on seaweed-draped rocks. It’s morning in Maine in Don Demers’ oilon-canvas work First Light of Day. The setting is Bar Harbor, looking toward Bar Island. Demers created the scene in his Kittery, Maine, studio based on plein air studies he did on location. “That’s how I typically work,” the 60-year-old artist says. “I invented the passing vessels and the fish weirs, knowing that weirs had been used in that location. TRENDS, ANALYSIS, PERSPECTIVE Two miles down on a seafloor strewn with chimney-like accretions that spew a black plume of super-heated chemical soup, life exists. Tube worms 7 feet long have colonized here, along with tiny translucent octopuses, giant clams and shrimp dining on bacteria that produce energy not by photosynthesis but chemosynthesis in this light-starved, chemicalrich environment. Most mechanical controls depend on a sheathed cable to actuate push-pull operation at the engine-speed lever. Several manufacturers produce similar cables to standard specifications, known as 3300 series, and this ensures continuity for the engine maker, the control supplier, the installer and the technician making adjustments. All cables attach in the same way and have the same thread, so all fittings are transferable. The inner core of all cables have the same “throw” — the distance it can travel — so engine brackets can be consistent. Cable prices and quality vary greatly, so difficult runs that have a tight radius or a long distance require a better cable for smooth, reliable operation. HERRESHOFF S-BOAT Built by the Herreshoff Manufacturing Co. in 1925, the S-Boat Mischief had belonged to the same owner since 1932 and was a resident of Brooklin Boat Yard when the owner died. His estate left the yacht in the yard’s care with the understanding that she would continue to be maintained and sailed. In August 2011, the yard began an extensive refit that turned into a complete restoration, as often happens with classic wooden yachts. Mischief was bought toward the end of the project, and now resides in Newport, Rhode Island — a part of the Narragansett Bay S-Boat racing fleet. Terry Ingels’ first command was her own 25-foot Cape Dory sailboat at the mouth of the Chesapeake at age 18. Her most recent was an 82-foot Viking sportfisherman that cruised between the Viking factory in New Jersey and New England. In between, there have been Browards, Burgers, Palmer-Johnsons, Lazarras, Westports, Deltas, Sunseekers and Feadships — some as large as 150 feet. There are two deeply evocative moments aboard the classic William Hand-designed motorsailer Guildive.
