WOMEX, the World Music Expo, returned to Tampere, Finland for the second time in its history from October 22–26. As well as conferences, awards, documentary screenings and no shortage of networking, the event included 60 artist showcases. These were a chance for emerging global artists to find international booking agents, festival slots, record labels and media coverage. Clearly, there are too many names to mention here, but from those that Songlines witnessed, we must tip our hats to Belarusian accordionist Yegor Zabelov, the ridiculously uplifting Chinese Sani folk group Manhu, ‘king of bhangra’ Malkit Singh (who put on one hell of a show), Dutch-Kurdish singer Meral Polat and her powerful group, vocal sensations The Baltic Sisters, feel-good Capeverdean tour de force Mário Lúcio and improvisatory English folk duo Spafford Campbell.…
