These are my honest-to-God go-to’s, starting with What’s Going On… It was a total breakaway from the optimistic sounds of Motown, it was Marvin rebelling against that. It was made as a concept album, actually they called it a song cycle. He took inspiration from his brother who’d returned from the Vietnam War, and the things affecting him. It was a very social and political album, and pre-empted a lot of the ecological themes of today. I mean, ‘Mercy, Mercy Me (The Ecology)’, unfortunately it’s still topical now, if not more than ever. It also came at a time when the hi-fi had come into its own, so the production is really interesting, it’s making the most of separation and panning,…
