Vieux Farka Touré, Amadou & Mariam, Oumy Gueye, Tal National, Songhoy Blues and Bassekou Kouyaté have joined together to record ‘The Sahel Song’ for UNOCHA, the UN’s office for humanitarian affairs, in response to the current crisis in the Sahel. It is estimated that this year 29 million people in the region, roughly one in four, will need aid, be that life-saving assistance or protection, which is five million more than in 2020. The crisis has been exacerbated by a combination of factors including poverty, the climate emergency, armed conflicts, chronically high food insecurity and malnutrition.
