OCEANIA is one of the more unique situations in world football. The region, which encompasses the Pacific Islands, is the only confederation that does not receive an automatic spot into the World Cup. This year’s qualification tournament will take place in March in Qatar. Cook Islands, Fiji, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Tahiti, and Vanuatu are slated to participate.
Of those sides, New Zealand is heavily projected to advance. Since Australia left the OFC in 2006 Kiwis have stepped in as the powerhouse in the Pacific Islands. They have represented the region in each of the last three playoffs, with their 2010 series victory of Bahrain sealing their second-ever appearance in the World Cup.
