HOW TO MEASURE YOURSELF ACCURATELY ALWAYS MEASURE YOURSELF BEFORE you choose a pattern size to cut out. The sizes do vary greatly from pattern to pattern, so it’s always best to measure yourself accurately and then refer to the pattern’s size chart to find your size. The chart will usually be printed on the pattern envelope or on the instructions inside. Measure yourself in your underwear and preferably in the bra you’ll be wearing underneath your garment as this can alter the measurements slightly. Use a fabric tape measure as it’ll curve around your body well for accuracy. You can measure on your own if you stand in front of a mirror, but, for best results, ask a friend to help so they can check the tape measure is sitting…

I started sewing figure skating costumes at 18 years old when I wanted to create my own costumes in which to perform. I loved designing them to go with the theme and music and adding all the bling. Since moving to Hawaii where there is no ice rink on my island, I learned to sew with non-stretch fabric. I always loved the styles from the 1940s through the 1960s and I started collecting vintage patterns from those decades. When Poornima Kirloskar-Saini’s beloved mother Kunda Kirloskar died during the COVID-19 pandemic, Poornima sought a way to channel her sorrow into purpose. At the same time, she saw how the pandemic had disproportionately affected ethnic minority women from low-income households. Many of these women had caregiving responsibilities, language barriers, or cultural norms that prevented them from entering the workforce. When their husbands’ zero-hour contract roles were suddenly lost, they faced an economic emergency.
