* STAR LETTER * ELMER ADAPTATION I loved the Elmer jumper in issue 239 but know that my previous attempts at Swiss darning have not been successful, so I embarked on knitting Elmer within the main body. I adjusted the design to incorporate the loose coloured squares, both on the sleeves, as per the pattern within the mag, but also on front and back. I decided to knit Elmer on the back of the garment and make it a zip-up jacket as it is for my grandaughter and open fronts are what her parents prefer. I am super-happy with how it looks which involved transferring the design onto a different pattern. This change was tricky but I am so very pleased with the outcome as are her parents. Sewing the…

I was lucky enough to be The Star Letter Winner in Issue 235 and won a voucher to spend at The Yarn Dispensary – what a wonderful establishment! I decided to knit a jumper and hat for my granddaughter Emily's 10th birthday and selected yarn from WYS's Bo Peep range. The hat pattern was fine but I had to find another jumper pattern for the panda motif that I wanted. I sadly fell short of jumper yarn so I contacted the Yarn Dispensary to obtain some more yarn and the lovely ladies there were so helpful and able to locate the same dye batch number. MATTRESS STITCH Place your knitted pieces RS up side by side. Thread your yarn on to a needle, anchor the end and weave along an edge to your start point. SHAPING UP Q I love making toys but they never look as they should once stuffed. Do you have any tips? Perry McIntyre Good question, Perry! When I was a child and first started knitting toys, stuffing was hard to come by. My mum would keep a stash of old tights for me and I would cut them up and stuff my toys with them. This resulted in some very lumpy toys but I loved them just the same! I found in later years a shop which sold kapok filling. This was much better than old tights but I was never quite happy with it as it tended to have little sharp bits within it.
