We here at HQ think of Simply Knitting as a huge family of knitters who gather together within these pages to talk about their favourite hobby every month.We’re a varied bunch, from the very young, casting on their first project (perhaps with Granny on hand to help out with the odd dropped stitch), to the more mature knitter, working on their umpteenth matinee jacket and booties (and with a handful of unfinished Fair Isle knits in the cupboard). It really doesn’t matter what you like to knit, or how many knit miles you’ve got under your wings, you are more than welcome in the Simply Knitting gang, in fact we love having you all here! Rachel is the co-founder of UK Alpaca, which makes yarns from British alpaca fleeces Up early or slow to rise? Up at 7am but I need at least two mugs of tea, a bath with bubbles and breakfast before I leave at 9am for the office – a good 100 yards away! First job of the day? Designer Claire Garland certainly has – she creates amazing animal patterns under her company name, Dot Pebbles. When it comes to knitting, choosing yarn is the most exciting bit so it’s important that you understand what it’s made from. Your main choices will be natural fibres (animal-based) synthetic fibres or blends of these. Traditionally, wool has been a popular fibre for yarn because of its versatile, natural quality and the fact that it’s easy to unravel and reknit. BELLA BUDDIES I have now completed making my Bella Bunkins bunny from the kit that came with issue 184 of Simply Knitting. I actually knitted it for my Maine Coon cat whose name is Bunnie Bear. She’s almost two years old and isn’t into chewing, so I thought she would like it to play with and it’s so cute how she snuggles with it when she’s sleeping, too. Among today’s knitters, the most commonly used needle is the classic straight needle, which was probably invented in the mid-19th century. They’re easy to use and ideal for making flat fabric, especially since the needle head prevents the stitches from slipping off. However, the oldest-known needles are actually double-pointed ones – they can be seen in several 14th-century paintings. These are usually used to make seamless tubular fabrics, such as socks, which is easier than it sounds! Double-pointed needles are used in sets of four or five. The group has been running for a couple of years now, and when the eight members get together they love to create knitted garments, toys and homeware, which they then sell at their local market stall in Hemel Hempstead twice a year. The profits made at these market events are donated to their local hospice.
