I suspect I am not alone in the belief that being on holiday gives you knitting super-powers and the ability to knit more (and faster) than you ever can at home. The weird and wonderful designs avid knitters create are always a delight to discover and one that caught our eye was the fabulous fibrous replica of a human brain, created by psychiatrist Dr Karen Norberg. We spoke to Karen, of the National Bureau of Economic Research in Cambridge, Massachusetts to find out what inspired her to create The Knitted Brain. WASHING WORRIES Q What’s the correct procedure for washing hand-knits? I’ve heard too many horror stories of felting and shrinking and would like to be completely sure I’m doing the right thing. Pippa Owen, via email Caring for hand-knitted garments starts before they’ve even been knitted – it’s best to make a swatch of any garment before you start knitting and save the ball band from the yarn you’re using. Check the ball band of the yarn your garment was knitted in for the washing instructions, but even then it’s best to err on the side of caution. If you still have the swatch you made then wash that to see how the knit fares. If your washing machine has a gentle hand-wash cycle then this will save you washing…

We love seeing your fabulous charity knitting projects, and what a brilliant selection of adorable knits we have this month! EGGCELLENT KNITS I would like to let you know about my latest knitting for charity project. My local hospice in Weston-super-Mare, the Weston Hospice, asked for knitters to knit chicks and bunnies to cover a Cadbury’s Creme Egg. To raise funds for the hospice, I knitted a few and took them into work. I soon received dozens of orders from work colleagues and knitted around 70 chicks, bunnies and even a few dinosaurs! SIMPLY ROYAL I just thought that I would write in and say what a lovely free pullout Simply Royal Baby Knits was in issue 183 of Simply Knitting! Here are my versions of the Sweet Petite and Lovely in Lace projects which were featured. For the Sweet Petitie peplum cardigan I decided to use a lovely shade of a glittery lilac yarn and a white shimmey yarn. I felt that the shades were sparkling and just perfect for two young girls! This will be for two sisters who are one and three years old. I then knitted Lovely in Lace in King Cole Baby Spot for a baby expected this May. I also plan to knit a couple more of the gorgeous patterns from this booklet in the future, too!…

ChiaoGoo stainless steel circular. I love them mostly because they don’t snag when I’m knitting with very delicate 100% wool. When I’m not yarn-wrangling, I’m a clinical psychologist in the NHS, treating people who have all sorts of mental health problems.
