Have you ever seen trees decked out in pom poms or a lamppost wrapped in yarn, and wondered who could be behind this colourful street art? Well, if you were in Ireland it might just have been the members of the Yarn Bombing Mountmellick club. The group started back in 2014 when Nina Horan commented on a yarn bombing post on Facebook: “Wouldn’t this be great for Mountmellick?” She got an enthusiastic response, so a meeting was arranged and the club took off from there. MAGIC KNOT SPLICING This technique is best for joining yarn when you are continuing to work in the same colour as it is hard to control the exact point of the join. It creates a very strong knot and is invisible which means that, unlike most joining techniques, you can use it in the middle of a row without worrying about it showing in the finished knitting – great if you’re short on yarn or are knitting a complicated pattern repeat. CAST ON: CABLE METHOD  Use it for a firm edge, and when adding stitches in your work. 1 Make a slip knot. Insert right-hand needle into the stitch as if to knit. TOY-TASTIC! A friend asked if I could make her a Sven the Swedish Chef doll from the muppets. I based the pattern on Alan Dart’s One Man Band from issue 121. I made everything else up as I went along such as the chef’s toque, apron and so on. I did use Alan’s pattern for the chicken, from his Farmyard Frolics collection in issue 25. I’ve also just finished making his Strongman from issue 159. And now I’m working on a Dora the Explorer doll, based on a Jean Greenhowe pattern. It’s always my absolute highlight when I get your magazine, so it was no question that it would travel with me on my holiday to Thailand. Here, you can see me in our hotel next to the swimming pool and the beach in Koh Samui. One of our Thailand friends fell in love with my mice so I knitted her this little mouse during our holiday. I spent hours walking the streets of Chaweng to find a wool shop, because I had no toy stuffing. CHAIN STITCH  This is the foundation of all crochet stitches. 1 About 15cm (6in) from the end of the yarn, make a loop with the ball end on top.
