LAST MONTH I RELATED THE STORY OF OUTLAW Juan Soto’s demise at the hands of Sheriff Harry Morse. Known as the “Bloodhound of the Far West,” Morse also brought in many infamous characters like Bartolo Sepulveda and “Red-Handed” Procopio Bustamante, nephew of the legendary Joaquin Murrieta.
Henry Nicholson “Harry” Morse was born on February 2, 1835, in New York City. His father, grandfather, and great-grandfather had fought in the War of 1812, the Revolutionary War, and the French and Indian War respectively. At the age of 10, with his parents’ blessing, Harry went to sea, and he spent four years sailing between New York and Liverpool. In 1849 he signed on to the Panama , a ship headed to the West Coast and the gold fields of California.
