Further to the question posed on your November cover, ‘What is an acceptable cartridge-to-kill ratio?’ [Ed: in reference to David Whitby’s article in the same issue], I would like to offer the following observations.
Assuming we are talking game shooting and an appropriate gun/cartridge combination, I think the average cartridge-to-kill ratio should be roughly 4:1. Now, I expect this average to be too high for many Guns, however, my reasoning is that no one should shoot at live quarry without attaining a very good level of competency.
Pigeon-holing (no pun intended) game shooting into three categories, I would rate them as follows:
1. Rough shooting, including pigeons, semi/driven and duck-flighting days, birds a max of 15-30 yards up.
2. Formal days, including driven grouse, partridge and pheasants, birds testing yet…
