As the cruise industry has grown, it has also driven innovation in ship design. The ocean liner peaked at approximately 1,000ft (300m) in length and measured around 80,000gt. Today, that is considered to be mid-sized for a cruise ship, with the latest generation of ships exceeding the 200,000gt mark and carrying well over 6,000 passengers, plus crew.
Long-term CEO of Royal Caribbean, Richard Fain, who guided the growth from the 70,000gt Sovereign of the Seas introduced in 1988 through the 137,000gt and 157,000gt ships to Oasis of the Seas, at 226,838gt, and now Icon of the Seas at 248,663gt, was fond of telling people the ships were getting larger to incorporate all the innovations.
