MEET THE MAKER Helen Mends started at farmers markets in Toronto in 2018, mending textiles and making replacements for disposable items from upcycled materials. Since that time we have kept more than 3,800 damaged items out of landfills. Helen Mends makes products like makeup wipes, produce and tote bags, coffee filters, menstrual pads and pantiliners, cutlery kits, breastfeeding pads, hankies, and seasonal items—all using discarded materials. We are always looking for ways to become more eco-friendly. In 2019 we started using a solar-powered battery for power at outdoor events. arc Thrift Stores are a Colorado-based thrift store chain. They have 32 store locations and 15 donation sites across the state. arc Thrift Stores' mission is to enhance the lives of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. They have developed several programs to achieve this goal. A key part of swing tacks are the knots that secure them at the beginning and end. While it seems like the most basic of skills, knowing how to make a good knot is imperative. To make a simple knot, moisten the index finger, and then wrap the thread end around the finger so the threads overlap. Roll the threads off the finger with the thumb and pull the thread tight (A). Another simple knot option is to wrap the thread end around the needle several times and hold the wrapped thread in place with one hand as you pull the needle and remaining thread through the wrapped thread with the other hand (B).
