‘This show will wreck your evening, your whole life and your day.’ These words ring out from the opening titles of Netflix’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, breaking the fourth wall and more – warning away the audience, but doing so in a way that invites them to enjoy the tragedy that will unfold on their screens. By the third season, the theme song acknowledges that anyone who is still watching ‘has clearly lost all reason’. Sung by the villainous character Count Olaf (Neil Patrick Harris), it covertly invites us to keep watching, but to do so as competent, intelligent consumers of scary tales. Claire Denis may well be the greatest female filmmaker in the history of cinema – but what’s for sure is that she hates that label. ‘When you say “female director” I already want to stop this conversation!’ Denis declaimed in a 2018 interview. ‘Female director? I feel like I am an animal. I am a female director like this is a female bird. Indigenous Australians’ lives are too often overlooked by politicians, media organisations and the broader sphere of middle-class Australia. In light of this, director Maya Newell’s feature documentary In My Blood It Runs (2019) provides tremendous insight into the Northern Territory’s Indigenous communities. By directing its point of view through protagonist Dujuan Hoosan, a ten-year-old Arrernte/ Garrwa child-healer, Newell’s film offers an intimate portrait of the embodied and psychological experience of being a young Aboriginal child. In My Blood It Runs is one of those unique films that gets under one’s skin, with audiences of diverse backgrounds given the opportunity to empathise and identify with young Dujuan and his family as they struggle to cope with various government institutions – the education system, welfare and law enforcement – whose ostensible purposes…
