These two badges, or more accurately plaques as they’ve got threaded mounts on the rear, have been puzzling us since Stan unearthed them a few weeks ago. Made by the high-end jewellers and medallists Johnsons of Milan, they appear to be awards presented at female-only rallies held by Innocenti in 1964 and 1965. Measuring around 95x60mm they appear to be cast in bronze, with one of them being gilded. The Scooterboy era saw advances, developments and changes in approach to almost every area of customising. When we look back on this time more often than not it’s the radical and full-blown custom machines that spring to mind... but arguably it’s the street racer which saw the greatest degree of change. In September 1966, David Brown purchased a BSA Sunbeam for £35. Little did he know then that this would lead to a love affair with the scooter that would last a lifetime. After they got married, David, his wife – and the scooter – moved to Gainford, a village in Teesdale. The scooter was at this time kept in a lockup old railway van up the lane from where they lived. Since 2005 (excepting 2020) my brother and I have ridden 100 miles to the IoW scooter rally, Trevor riding his 2003 Vespa PX200E Serie Speciale and me on my 1966 Lambretta Li150 Special. ‘Vespas never break down’ (or so the legend goes) and in 15 years of scootering, Trevor had only suffered minor problems with his clutch. Just as last month’s edition went to press the Government announced it was to consult on proposals to instigate ‘anti tampering’ legislation. If enacted this would make it an offence to supply, fit or use equipment that would tamper with a motor vehicle’s systems, specifically those connected with security, the environment and road safety. This legislation’s intended to create a safe operating environment for driverless cars and on the face of it appears benign. Anything that stops thieving scum overriding factory-fitted security has to be welcomed and given the state of our environment there’s no moral argument to make about interfering with anti-pollution measures. It’s not so long ago that the world of scooter tuning was the domain of guys in sheds with drills, files, and emery paper who tuned cast iron barrels by reshaping and enlarging the ports. That all changed at an AF Rayspeed Open Day in 1990, when along came the TS1 barrel. For those into tuning the game changed. The TS1 was a huge step up in power and was a product that anyone could buy off the shelf. But of course that wasn’t enough and fairly quickly the TS1 barrels were also being attacked by files and drills, making it produce even more power. Two generations, one ideal Hi Stan I was into the scene back in the 1980s and although my scooter had to go and make room for a family car the music and style always stayed with me. My daughter’s now 15 and having being brought up around the music and fashions she’s now showing an interest herself. Among the best known ‘stencil specials’, certainly in the north of England, were those produced by Lens of Shipley. Although they’ve now acquired cult status, with several scooters being superbly recreated using modern techniques, the originals were little more than ‘blow over’ schemes designed to move stock quickly but with little added cost. Most of the designs used simple silhouette stencils, basic masking and plenty of fogging. Ever since club scootering began in the 1950s there have been peaks and troughs in its popularity. With each new generation scootering evolves by adapting, developing and embracing fresh approaches. Although we all know that the survival of British scootering depends on attracting younger riders, many find it hard to accept that this next generation will have ideas of their own. How to attract a significant influx of youngsters to a scene largely populated by 50, 60 and even 70-year-olds is a subject for another time, but one sure-fire way of kindling interest is through family connections. This year and specifically the weekend of the Southport National marks a significant personal milestone as it marks my 40th year of attending scooter rallies. Back in 1981 my destination was Colwyn Bay but Southport also holds a special place in my memory. Having grown up nearby I passed seemingly endless summers there, with mischief aplenty being had in the seaside town. Scooter-wise, it’s never been my favourite rally as it’s simply too close, great for a midweek rideout but that’s the great thing about the Nationals; one month the venue’s on the doorstep and the next it’s at the other end of the country. The Syndicate – AKA The Syndicate – One of the few good things to come out of last year’s lockdown was the chance for musicians who wouldn’t normally work together to collaborate on virtual releases. AKA The Syndicate are one such band, bringing together a variety of musicians and singers, with Roddy Radiation and Dick Crippen representing the old school and members of a variety of current ‘names’ such as Dakka Skanks, The Launchers, Skatonics and many more joining the party. The result is a fairly laid back, at times almost pop tinged, reggae album that brings to mind a wide variety of other bands, from Madness at their most successful to very early UB40, and maybe even a hint of No Doubt thrown in for good measure. As we reach the end of 2021, it’s time to reflect on what’s happened over the past year. In retrospect, it will probably be memorable for all the wrong reasons. The year started with much uncertainty, mainly due to Covid regulations still being in place. In the early months, it was a case of ‘can we, can’t we?’ for event organisers, who were unsure if they could (or should) take a chance on continuing to make plans for events that may have to be suddenly cancelled. However, by the time the year reached mid-point, a clearer – and more positive – picture started to emerge, meaning that it was possible to look at things with a bit more clarity.
