The first sign that something’s wrong with an autolube tank is when two-stroke oil starts weeping between the frame seams near the engine mounting bolt. If that’s your problem, fear not, it’s an easy job to deal with. Having removed the tank, remembering to switch off the fuel and plug the end of the oil pipe, it looks like the oil tank is held on by a compression type plumbing joint but that’s only part of the story. In order to release the oil tank, not only is a deep 17mm socket needed, you’ll also have to make an extra-long extension bar. Only with this combination is it possible to release the nut, buried at the base of the filler tube, which holds the tank in place. In addition to…

Bruce Macpherson was a typical Eighties Scooterboy and, like many of his contemporaries from all over the UK, he was armed with a minimal budget, not much in the way of mechanical know-how, but huge bagfuls of enthusiasm! The Courettes – Here We Are (Damaged Goods – CD) An opening powerhouse electric guitar slide sets the tone for this compilation of the first two albums from highly rated Danish/Brazilian Garage group The Courettes. A mixture of The Sonics, old school punk, Duane Eddy, The Cramps and a hint of Sixties girl bands sends it deep into Medway territory, with favourable comparisons to The Milkshakes and The Prisoners being familiar touchstones for the band. A previous custodian of this rare, albeit unfashionable with many, Vespa treated it to a new coat of paint during the time it was in his ownership. The intention was for an all-over 70s shade of deep purple. Often there’s something of a gap between intent and reality; in this case, it’s not so much of a gap as a chasm. The thing is, the choice of paint colour, after having been applied, turned out to be quite a bit lighter than the dark, deep purple he was hoping for. Cue his mates, throwing a bit of good-natured ribbing in the direction of both the owner at the time and the 90 Racer. In 2017 I wrote a piece in my column titled ‘How much?’, commenting on the price of classic scooters and how the price of them had gone up in recent years. It was mainly aimed at the Lambretta which had seen a huge increase, certainly regarding the rarer models, and questioned whether prices would remain that high. The only downside about living way up north beside Aberdeen is that he’s miles away from a main dealership of any marque. One of the T5’s distinctive features is the noise-dampening crankcase cover. With ours showing evidence of some fairly enthusiastic corning it was tempting to simply order a new one. However, by ‘shaving’ the surface using a Stanley knife it was possible to remove most of the damage. A careful rub with some fine wet ‘n’ dry restored its textured surface and a few coats of black trim restorer brought back its colour. It’s not perfect but perfection’s not the aim of this build. We’re also lucky in that all the noise-deadening felt has survived. This was gently hand washed and once dry, the surface was sealed with a dusting of acrylic fabric paint.…

I first saw this style of seat a while back on one of our feature scooters, Barracuda Lambretta. I wasn’t exactly sure of the brand of seat at that time, but later confirmed it to be Streamline Seats of Germany when I saw a similar item on a Vespa which we also featured in the magazine. This led me to visiting their very helpful website at: www.streamlineseats.de, where I was able to use their interactive seat designer software to select the colour, length and style of seat, as well as added extras like a seat lock and uprated hinge. One of the rarest Piaggio production models, yet arguably one of the most overlooked smallframe Vespa scooters, is the 90 Racer. ‘Always the bridesmaid, never the bride’ is a metaphoric phrase that sums up the 90 Racer Vespa when compared with its highly sought-after, older and slimmer sister, the 90SS. Especially by collectors, which is a bit strange given the low amount of 90 Racers manufactured. Launched in 1971, the 90 Racer/90r, V9SS2T was in production between ’71 and ’74, with only 3512 examples made during that period. Engine specification is identical to that of the 90SS, with just the one superficial difference, in that the 90 Racer’s exhaust silencer was black instead of the chromed exhaust fitted to the 90SS. As I’m sure many of you are aware, Dixie King (of King’s Scooter Workshop in Milton Keynes) has been suffering with a form of brain cancer for some time now. Unlike many of us, who would most likely sit there feeling sorry for ourselves, Dixie has recorded the decline in his health, and changes in mood and attitude, in the form of a series of poems. These aren’t self-pitying works though, far from it. If anything, they show a surprising amount of positivity, and a huge amount of love for his wife Jules. They celebrate life, rather than the opposite, accepting what is happening to him as time progresses. Exhaust systems for scooters have moved on such a lot over the years that you hardly see the old types being grafted on to the back of a standard Clubman-type Lambretta exhaust. The one I found didn’t have lots of black two-stroke oil on its inner surface so presumably came off the Beetle for which it was intended. I have no recollection how much they were back in the day but today these VW pipes are relatively cheap and you can get them easily in chrome or stainless finish as, just like the Lambretta, the VW Beetle has stood the test of time, and the classic timeless style continues to be popular. In a bit of a jam... Hi Dan, Way back in the 60s I owned a Lambretta LD125 and paid the princely sum of £5 for it from an old guy. I set about giving it some much-needed TLC and painted horizontal black and red stripes on to the bodywork by hand (yes, my hands were steady then). One of the design parameters Pat set himself was that the conversion would be reversible, and that’s a principle Tim’s taken to extremes with his demonstrator. Not only is it a machine that is close to his heart – he even rode it on his wedding day – it’s also a rare beast. Manufactured in 1966, it’s a non-chrome ring TV175 that’s believed to be one of the youngest in existence. Exported direct from the factory to Malta, it spent most of its life in the resort of Bugibba, where it belonged to the local policeman. Cutting wasn’t an option, in fact Tim hasn’t even removed the standard loom or control cables. “I could convert this back to petrol in a couple of hours,” Tim promised.…

Although this is the first time I’ve been up close and in the guts of a T5, I’m no stranger to rebuilding a P-Range. The most important thing is to know one’s limits and for me that’s an engine rebuild. So, while ours is being sorted by someone who knows what they’re doing, it’s time to reflect on how the frame went together. Whether you’ve built a dozen scooters or done nothing more than change a plug, there’s always something new to discover. On this build it was fitting the loom. Through the eye of a needle Removing a PX loom is easy – simply disconnect everything and pull it out from the front. However, replacing one is a completely different matter. Regular readers will know that throughout this project my aim has been to keep our T5 original and that included the paint. Sadly, the legshields and mudguard had previously been attacked with a wire wheel. Even I had to concede they were too far gone to save but I was determined that any repair would match the rest of our T5’s ‘lived-in’ appearance. I’d already taken some advice from a contact in the VW ‘patina’ scene who said that given a good base coat it would be possible to age the surface using graphic paint effects. Evolution of the engine to power his dream machine took more than five years, though the final incarnation began in May 2018, following an initial conversation with Ron Moss about the scooter tuning legend’s then brand-new Clubman exhaust system. Ron mentioned a couple of engines he was working on at the time, based around crankcase induction variants of the TT3 Avanti barrel, with a third transfer port. Ron went on to describe the power delivery of the crankcase-induced TT3 engines as linear, with an unusual induction noise. Bruce was hooked, he wanted one. Modifications involved cutting a hole in the top of the crankcase housing, then building up with alloy weld to accommodate a reed block. RIP ‘HAPPY CHAPPY’ We are sad to announce that Nicky Reeves – more famously known as ‘The Happy Chappy’ – has passed away. Born in 1961, Nicky had Downs Syndrome. Living in Sleaford, Lincolnshire, he became closely attached to the Sleaford All-Knighters SC because of his love of scooters; but unfortunately, his medical condition meant that he could never ride a proper classic scooter – so the All-Knighters decided to build him something he could ride with a classic scooter twist. Nicky loved his scooter with a passion – so much so that the All-Knighters decided to run a series of charity scooter events under the banner of ‘The Happy Chappy’; these events were always well attended and scooterists would arrive from all over the UK to be part of…

Blue Moon plaque date Hi Mau, In response to the article published in the May edition re ‘The Mystery of the Blue Moon Club plaque’, on behalf of The Blue Moon Reunion Group (BMRG) I’d like to put the record straight as to the club’s opening date. As project leader of the said Blue Moon Plaque project, I can assure you that the club opened its doors for the first time on July 17, 1965 (as the attached flyer published at the time clearly shows). Pre-Covid, the BMRG staged several reunions (both discos and regular meet-ups) in Cheltenham, one of the biggest of which was the plaque unveiling on August 1, 2019. The event was broadcast live on local radio with a gathering outside the entrance to the former club…

Firefighter Sean started out his working life as a mechanic in the early 80s working on various scooters, repairing them and putting them back on the road. Sean was still at school when Quad came out and his mates all started to buy 50cc Vespa scooters, but Sean plumped for a Lambretta Vega. They had their own little scooter club – The Surrey Patriots – based around the Redhill area, but as time moved on, so did Sean and he joined The Last Great Act of Defiance Scooter Club in Crawley (which is still going to this day with some of the original members still being around).
