The peaks and troughs of Covid have been a cruel mistress to us all. Lives have been lost, the globe is in turmoil, the scooter rally scene is decimated and companies across the world have suffered. Like so many other businesses, Mortons Media, owner of Scootering magazine, has had to make some tough decisions over the last six months. Our print division was affected, while the shows division became almost defunct overnight as event after event had to be cancelled... and these are only just starting again now. That has affected us all here, and those cutbacks also meant a tightening of the belt in the publishing division too… but among all this, there has been a glimmer of hope; it has been the publishing (magazine) division which remained buoyant.…

Painful lesson learned After many years of not riding (wife, house and kids) the imminent arrival of a Vespa Douglas Sportique post-lockdown saw me engage in motorcycle training to improve my skills and to work towards a full licence. I did my research on the local companies and selected the one that best suited my requirements. Upon reflection, I should have done just that little bit more and looked at the training school’s practice area and surface. An old set of tennis courts with crumbling tarmac is certainly not conducive to emergency stops on large motorbikes! If the Quattrini has an obvious weakness, it’s the carb rubber. No matter how well they’re manufactured, every carb rubber needs replacing sooner or later, and at around £100 a pop, the Quattrini rubber is a very expensive service item. Both Chiselspeed and LTH have produced an adaptor plate which enables a TS1 manifold to be used instead. Admittedly the adaptor plates come at a cost but it only takes a couple of seasons to see a return on that investment. We all know that carrying a spare carb rubber is a wise precaution but I let myself down on this occasion. Alex Van Dyke has been a regular competitor since 2009 but for varying reasons has yet to complete a full season. At Cadwell Alex had two machines at his disposal and was joined by his father for a special boys weekend of racing. The old fella, Larry, is an ex-racer himself, having competed in mini stocks and BHR250 special classes since the 1980s. This was Alex’s introduction to scooters, which fascinated him from the first time he saw scooters race at Lydden in 2008. While in New York, he visited the New York City Police Museum in Lower Manhattan with his wife and seeing an original Spanish NYPD Lambretta on display, he decided to build a replica. The 1983 rally season opened with Morecambe, and we tried a new tactic that we’d seen others use: a back-up van… help if (when) any of the scooters break down and somewhere to sleep at night. We all chipped in to hire a van but when we arrived to pick the van up on Friday afternoon, the hire company, knowing who was hiring it, gave us the most clapped-out van they had; it wasn’t even taxed nor did it have working lights. Unfortunately Stef’s generosity in offering a ride on the SS wasn’t matched by the weather. I’d optimistically describe the conditions as awful. With standing water and torrential rain there could be no exploration of the machine’s sporting credentials. The first thing that struck me about the scooter was the sound. As soon as it burst into life I was transported back to the 1970s. Both the Vespa and Lambretta can be reliable machines providing they are looked after. If they are serviced and checked at regular intervals, they should provide many thousands of trouble-free miles. Though you may want a dealer to do the annual service which is recommended, during the intervening time you, the owner, should also perform interim maintenance on your own scooter – simple procedures to make sure everything is working correctly. By doing so, any early indications of a problem can be spotted and the problem attended to, potentially preventing what may be a costly breakdown and repair further down the line. Paul Bradfield spent three years, on and off, building something of a trick Lambretta for himself. He knew what he was going to call his project, however, his mates came up with an alternative. (Hi from New Zealand) Picture (Kodachrome slide) taken at Timaru, New Zealand in 1962 when I was 19. Original colour was grey/ navy, repainted by my late brother (the original owner) and me in lemon yellow. The bright fairing trim was added from a later model; the badge was created and painted by us from seeing the badges on Piaggio scooters. We mistakenly thought the ‘P’ would become a ‘D’ for Douglas. Regardless of what any manufacturer says or does there are some people who’ll never accept the idea of a four-stroke auto, but their numbers are falling. Speaking as someone who owns more two-stroke scooters than is strictly necessary, I can vouch for the fact that, although they’re tremendous fun, ownership is often a challenging and wallet-draining experience. Cadwell was a first for rookie racer Phil Hallam, and surprisingly so was the scooter in question. Though he has ridden scooters for years, his choice has always been the series 2. Practise was taken at a delicate pace while he came to grips with the new machine. With a first lap time of 2m 48s, there was huge room for improvement and over the weekend he knocked an incredible 23 seconds off that, recording his fastest time of 2m 25s. I’d known and corresponded with Eddie for several years, although I didn’t meet him until 2017 while compiling an article about the Manchester Lyons SC (arguably the longest-running all makes UK scooter club). Eddie wasn’t one of the original club members (he joined in 1966), but over time he became the unofficial archivist for what was to become one of the most prolific UK scooter clubs whose members went on to dominate scooter sport.
