Nu Ska Vol. 1 - Various Artists (Specialized Records) For the last seven or eight years, the Specialized charitable organisation has released compilation albums based around a theme to raise funds for The Teenage Cancer Trust, Tonic and others. They've roped in an ever-increasingly global range of bands from across the ska spectrum to cover classic records as inventively as possible. This time around, they've taken on the big step of releasing a compilation of original music from 17 acts, again taken from a wide variety of countries. The compilation leans more towards the 2-Tone sound than the revival of the earlier forms, or its ska-punk successor. Normally at this time of year, pages of this magazine would be alive with pictures/reports of early season racing and many of you would have had an enjoyable weekend watching scooters being thrashed silly. Sadly but totally understandably the ACU has cancelled all meetings up to the end of May. The BSSO is working with the host clubs to try to rearrange missed meetings later in the year, although other forms of racing are of course equally affected and late season track-time will become much sought after. By the time you read this, we will be nearly three months into some degree of lockdown here in the UK and, like so many, my ways of getting through it have evolved. Initially, it was 'Let's get jobs done' so out came the decorating stuff and the household tools to get all sorts of odd little jobs done. The cracks got filled, the dripping taps were fixed, the hinges oiled and all that stuff. Naturally, I also spent plenty of time in my garage workshop tinkering with the scooter and cycle stuff, adjusting, lubricating, tweaking and of course, the toolbox got its seemingly annual tidy through and sort-out. Fashions come and go but for now there can be no doubt, patina is all the rage. Top of most people's wish I ist are machines in their original paint but there are many other ways to achieve the distressed look. The problem is that most techniques relate to steel, and rust is relatively easy to replicate. The problem with scooters, Lambrettas in particular, is that many of their parts are alloy. Paint them to look like rust and the average punter may be fooled - but enthusiasts will know different. The problem, as happened in my case, gets worse when a part is missing from an otherwise perfectly distressed machine. There are several conversions, both on the market and coming to market soon, that enable a classic scooter to be retro-fitted with an electric motor. As with anything that breathes a new lease of life into classic scooters, they're a development that I applaud. Unfortunately add together the cost of a roadworthy classic with the price of a fitted kit and the best part of £8k wi 11 be sat on the driveway. For a bike that's only capable of relatively short journeys that's a lot of money, especially when a bidet-shaped scoot from China can be purchased for half that price. I quickly realised three things; I couldn't find anyone that'd ridden one, a new one was completely unaffordable but no one understands what a used one is worth. Johnny Bradley just sneaked this event in before we teetered on the edge of the national apocalypse. Johnny had also marshalled his kith and kin into helping out; no one got away without his two sons making sure they'd bought raffle tickets. Fair play to them, even the bands couldn't hide. The Telford Dukes SC were well in attendance and took care of security. To be pretty honest, they had precious little to do as the atmosphere was brilliant and friendly throughout. Marshall 'Chuckles' Swonnell was best known for his Lambretta Club affiliations. He'd been in the fabric of the LCGB for a long time before I first met him at a 1967 grass track event. He brought all the gear required for the event in the LCGB van. He was the main man when it came to running an event; he was loved by all and was a great fit for the LCGB. Their blue Commer van, dubbed Chuck's 'second bedroom', was at almost all LCGB events. He was always there to help with running events at places like the Southend Rally, Isle of Wight, Curborough Sprint, Baitings Dam Hill Climb, Widnes Saints Grass Track, plus numerous other meetings. Dear Mau, I bought a Lambretta Li 150 Series 2 from Alec Bennett's in Portswood, Southampton in 1967, aged 16 (reg: 209 COW). It wouldn't have been new as I was an apprentice earning less than £5 per week. I sold it in 1969 to fund my first car (a five-year-old Triumph Herald convertible) purchased for the princely sum of £295. I never had a photo of my scooter; in those days you had to take pies on a camera, then get the film developed. I'd love any info on my scooter. A photo would be the icing on the cake. It wasn't until her hubby Mickey found himself between jobs that they decided to open a shop together, which was when the name Kulture Shack came into being. PAUL KARSLAKE International artist and well-known scooterist, Paul Karslake, died in hospital on March 22, 2020. The news was announced by members of his family in a short statement outlining that he had been taken to hospital with breathing problems. The family commented that Paul was a fantastic husband, a wonderful father, an amazing family man, as well as being an excellent friend to all - he is now at peace. They have also asked for some consideration at what is a difficult and distressing time. Born in 1958, Paul was the son of the late Mike Karslake, himself well known for founding the Lambretta Museum in Kesterfield and for his work and involvement with the British Lambretta Owners Association and the LCGB. Chuck was always up for a lark. We met often and I never heard a disparaging word about him. At a Wakefield rally I asked the rideout marshals to gather for a photo. He hadn't been a marshal, but strode over with a broad grin and said: "Where do you want me?" After all, Marshall was his name.
