To say I was relieved that I’d sorted my Lambretta out, was an understatement. My fingers were firmly crossed that the repair would hold and there would be no dreaded recovery ride home. So after a short lap of the campsite, it was time to chill and crack open a can. For some years after the ’79 Mod revival, despite a huge upsurge in demand for second hand scooters thanks to Quadrophenia, it was relatively easy to pick one up for £50 or even considerably less. Twenty years on prices had risen considerably. Finding genuine bargain priced old Lambrettas, Vespas and for that matter other makes of old scooters had become a rarity. Certainly that was the case in the UK. At the time, social media was a new entity and the internet was just a shadow of what it has become today. Average prices for shed, garage and barn finds were beginning to rise and rise, although they were nowhere near the levels asked for what are basically basket cases today. The Undertones The Undertones and The Undertones – Hypnotised (both Salvo Records) For some reason, The Undertones are only remembered on the scooter scene for their debut single. On this showing, I think it’s fair to say that we’re really doing the band an injustice. Their first album is a triumph of early pop-punk, their lyrical interest centring on teenage romance, relationships and general growing pains, all carefully crafted into 14 brief, and to the point, guitar led songs – the original release coming in at less than 30 minutes running time. The date was set for Sunday, October 9, for the club to meet near the football stadium in Monza and to head off at 9am punctually for Lecco! On the Sunday morning, Tino and I got up early and set off to meet everyone, and of course we didn’t want to be late! Sadly the weather forecast was mixed with Milan and Monza cloudy but over the foothill mountains of Lecco rain was forecast. This didn’t dampen our spirits, in fact having ridden so much in the cold UK rain, warm Italian rain was not at all daunting. The Vespa T5 is a bit of an enigma, when it first appeared on our shores in 1985 it received a frosty reception from the scootering ‘community’ who had been more accustomed to the look of the work-horse P range. The rectangular headlight, curved instrument panel and flat rear end were a lot to take in, but the extra performance soon had the rally faithful smitten. This extra oomph came about due to an improved five-port, Nikasil-lined, aluminium cylinder, designed to give more power, more revs and have better cooling than its equivalent earlier cousin model. Due to this ‘sporty’ performance and sleek look it came with the catchphrase ‘Pole Position’. We rode down on the Friday and it all went well until we hit Tamworth where Charlie broke down. A quick fix and we set off again, but within 60 seconds of riding another lad somehow came off and ended up underneath his scooter (I hope the speed camera got a good photo of it). Luckily only his pride was hurt and the scoot just gained a bit of character. Friday night was a steady one in the Tamworth Arms with a fellow Waller playing his bagpipes. This was my first season as chairman, and I have to say it has been a fantastic year, with many highs, and a few lows. Some of the highlights for me were: We became cool, attractive and exciting I was a few years behind the ’79 revival so by the time I got my first scooter in 1984, despite feeling cool, it’s fair to say the ‘in crowd’ were no longer Mods. So I’ve never been cool. The race crowd (with very notable exceptions) seems to have shifted over the decades, from mullets and taches, to bald spots and pot bellies without ever seeing so much as a hint of glamour. While rubbing away at tired chrome I noticed a very bright GP pass by. At first I thought it was a brave move to go with such a shade, but when I got the opportunity for a proper look I ‘got’ the scheme and it instantly grew on me. As a theme the band has proper scooter rally links, members both attending and owning scooters in the 80s. After a number of years raising money for a variety of charities, a few of the ladies from Doughboys Scooter Club would like to announce the availability of their 2017 calendar! The chosen charity for this year is the Alzheimer’s Society. Lisa Kightley came up with the idea of doing a ‘calendar girls’ style calendar for 2017 so after a long pause and some nervous laughter, the process began and the date was set for the photo shoot. Some of the ladies braved the wind and rain of ‘Storm Katy’ to bring the scooters to the venue, and the rest, as they say, is now history. Like many towns Kilmarnock has an area where car showrooms congregate together. Just off this main strip is Go Full Throttle, a Piaggio dealership that’s going from strength to strength. Behind that success is David Boyd, a man with a passion for all things scootering but with a particular love of Vespa small-frames. The build-up Setting off from work on the Thursday afternoon towards Glencoe I started my journey with huge excitement for what lay ahead. The route took me onto Fort William and straight to Inverness, the starting point for all those brave enough to take part. My journey through Glencoe was spectacular, with the sun so low and shining on the mountains, the rocks looked like gems in a jeweller’s shop window. With so many small lochs in Glencoe, they were like pieces of a shattered mirror as they reflected the sunlight back up to the heavens above. Last year this same event was a city rally and had some great high-spots (a ride out past the spot where JFK was assassinated, where X really does mark the spot on the road) and excellent music choices. But this year was a camping rally, closer to Fort Worth with a beautiful lakeside camp site, country roads for great ride outs and plenty of room to consume the free beer and food that came with the price of admission. In June 2015 the Vespa Club Paris Ile-de-France rose from the ashes of the Vespa Club Paris 75 and in September 2015 held its first Vespa Parade Paris. Since this date the club has been very active, taking part to many events such as Vespa World Days 2016 in Saint Tropez, the Le Mans Classic race, various rallies – Perpignan, Lyon (Rally des Gones) – monthly meetings, photo shoots and demonstrations in Paris organised by the FFMC (the equivalent of MAG/Motorcycle Action Group in the UK) to defend our right to ride our Vespas through Paris and its suburb. SANTA POD: OCTOBER 15-16, 2016 Round 11 and there was everything to play for at the final round of the Straightliners ¼ Mile 2016 Sprint Championship. This last leg of the series had a smaller turnout of just five scooters over the weekend, nearly all Lambretta apart from Mitchell Betts, who turned up to race his Gilera Runner sprinter. The weather was good for the sprinters on Saturday but only Gav Watson and Max Aldous was there to take advantage. With it being an extremely busy event they only got a couple of runs in each. There was no benefit throughout the day from any tailwinds, which can often play a big role in this sport, but despite this fact… Gav still managed a new personal outright best of 13.44…

Why Celle? The Vespa Club of Celle regularly organizes activities, including its annual ‘Heidetreffen’ in nearby Walle in August. This scooter rally is one of the largest in northern Germany and has a reputation for bringing together scooter riders of all generations and backgrounds. The club’s members are known for combining their passion for Vespas with the importance of family and community and events are planned with these aspects in mind. Also, geographically, Celle is fairly central within Europe and so we hope this will enable us to welcome many scooterists of all nationalities, either arriving by scooter or flying in from much further afield next year. The black and white is of my father-in-law Martin Cattell in 1964 outside his parents’ garage in Wickford, Essex, tinkering with his 1957 150 Bella aged 16. Fast forward to the second photo showing him again outside his parents’ garage but this time with his 1959 200 Bella. Martin, a member of the Scooter Collective, is still riding after 52 years. “Will a GTS300 one day be classed as old school? Now that may indeed create some discussion!” In slang, ‘old school’ or ‘old skool’ can refer to anything that is from an earlier era or anything that may be considered ‘old-fashioned’. The term is commonly used to suggest a high regard for something that has been shown to have lasting value or quality. I recently had the misfortune to end up reading a social media debate (heated argument) on ‘old school’ scooters… and it got me thinking that it’s virtually impossible to define in scootering terms, but the keyboard social media warriors were certainly out in force arguing it. So taking a Wikipedia definition, all our scooters are from an earlier era but how on earth would you define ‘old…

It’s awell-used cliché but for David’s enthusiasm really is more than skin deep. His first scooter was a V100, followed by a V90. Although he’s owned many different scooters, both Vespa and Lambretta over the years, his first love remains the Vespa small frame. If you’re lucky his Vespa 50 may be in the workshop when you visit. “When I started to weed out my scooters I couldn’t bring myself to get rid of this V50,” says David. “I’d spent a long time getting it back to exact factory specifications only to rediscover how poorly a standard V50 performs!
