The ubiquity of smartphones means we all have a powerful tool for protecting the environment right in our pockets—if we stock them with the right apps. Ghost Gear Reporter is one app that sailors would do well to have on hand. It allows folks to log the location of derelict fishing gear discovered along the shoreline, on the water, or on the seabed via a simple, user-friendly form. The app relays that information to local conservation organizations for clean-up, where possible. An estimated 800,000 tons of commercial fishing gear winds up in the ocean annually, and it routinely ensnares sea life. Back in early December, I joined a crew of my colleagues from Soundings and Passagemaker magazines in Cape Town, South Africa. There, we met the folks from Robertson & Caine Yachts and were given not only a spectacular tour of the country but a granular look at where and how Leopard/Moorings catamarans—among the most popular multihulls on earth—are built. A large part of the good/bad equation is tender management. Multihulls, either power or sail, offer an eclectic choice of systems to handle launching, storing, and retrieving tenders. As the push for more renewable energy grows, the need for high-capacity, long-life battery storage becomes more essential. Everybody and their uncle seems to want to transition to lithium batteries onboard, and in most cases, it’s a done deal that lithium is what’s needed to power all of the goodies on new boats. Until now, though, there was little serviceability or recyclability in the life cycle of these batteries, making the claim that they’re “greener” a rather dubious Catch-22. Enter the Aceleron Essential battery, which won the first-ever citation in the environmental design category at the DAME Design Awards announced at the annual METS show in Amsterdam last fall. French catamaran builder Lagoon has launched a new 51-footer that is an evolution of the best features from previous models. With a new rig and an open interior, this swanky cat should find a solid target market in both charter and private use. Like its predecessor, the Lagoon 50, the 51 is the work of VPLP and Patrick Le Quément, and in fact it shares the same hulls with a slightly different bridge deck. The new model gained two feet in LOA thanks to longer swim plat-forms and also slimmed down by about 2,000 pounds. When I first cranked up my marine-magazine career eons ago, most of the big magazines dispatched editors every year to the Chicago International Boat Show.
